DOJ Data Breach Exposes Personal Information of California CCW Holders

On Tuesday, the California State Sheriff’s Association (CSSA) informed our office that the California Department of Justice (DOJ) had suffered a data breach. This occurred as part of the DOJ’s launch of its “2022 Fi****ms Dashboard Portal.” This public site allows access to certain information, however, personal information of Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit holders is not supposed to be visible. This includes, but is not limited to a person’s name, age, address, Criminal Identification Index (CII) number and license type (Standard, Judicial, Reserve and Custodial). This pertains to all California CCW holders, including Fresno County residents.

After learning of the breach, the DOJ pulled down the dashboard site along with all related links. However, portions of private information may have been posted on social media websites. It is unknown exactly how much time the information was accessible.

The State Attorney General’s Office has stated it is working with urgency to determine the scope of the breach. It plans to contact CCW holders directly to advise them of the breach and will institute a program to reduce any harm or damages to CCW holders that resulted from the breach.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is urging any of our local residents who learn their identity was compromised as a result of this data breach to please make an online report by visiting https://www.fresnosheriff.org/report-a-crime-online.html

An incident like this could be mitigated or avoided with proper training, staffing, and policies for security. Action, not laws will stop this sort of incident so be proactive, not reactive with a response.

At least three people were injured in a shooting outside of a graduation ceremony for West Side Leadership Academy in Gary, Indiana.

Once again an incident at a hospital and again the question is where was security? Most likely it was one of those, not my problem I can observe and report companies or hospital policies for them to have a hands-off approach. Well, this will as we have seen with this cause injury and possibly the loss of life. I have been told by a hospital here in Maine that it is not a security or training issue but an issue with society. I say it time and time again security is there to protect not be a window dressing that is supposed to be a deterrent. Proper training and policies would allow security to mitigate this sort of threat We can consult, train your staff, and provide these services if needed. Time to step up and protect your facilities, staff, and the public that enters your facilities

A North Carolina hospital was temporarily placed on lockdown during what police called an "active shooter incident" that left one person injured in Goldsboro.

The one thing that no one talks about after an act of violence incident is the response time. Time for a reality check. during an active shooter incident every 15 seconds is a new victim on average so a 5 minute response your beat a minimum of 20 new victims from the time a response was dispatched not the time the incident started or the 911 call was made. Let that sink in that is from the time the officer takes the call to respond. Being proactive versus reactive makes a difference.

With the current number of active shooter incidents do you wonder why they depend on a response, especially in places that should have security? What is the purpose of the security if they are not able to react or are not trained to react? When people say over and over we never thought this would happen here it is denial it is proof that they are not ready. We can help with training your staff and with writing an act of violence response plan. Security is not a window dressing as a deterrent, security should be a proactive response to help mitigate a situation. Security is asset protection and should be used as such. Train them and use them as they should be in schools businesses, and medical facilities. This is what we do consult and train security and your staff to be prepared.
