TWIN HOME BIRTH STORY FROM ONE OF OUR CLIENTS 💕💕💕👇👇👇
Micah & Titus’ Birth Story
"Dec 22-27: prodromal labor on and off mostly at night, every night I thought would be the night and it was getting discouraging
Dec 27: another night of what I thought was just false labor. I laid down with Luca to put him to bed around 8:15 and contractions would surprise me every few minutes, since all the previous nights they would slow down when I laid down. At 8:50 I left his room and joined my mom and vincenzo in the living room to watch the great British baking show. They started really picking up, but again I thought it was probably just going to fizzle out. We went upstairs around 9:30 to go to bed early and everything immediately picked up.
Contractions were on top of one another and I could barely move. Vincenzo called our midwife Leslie and doula to come and they were both here within 15 minutes. Our midwife realized it was happening pretty fast so she called in the other two midwives.
I labored standing, leaning on the birth ball and on my knees and that’s about it. We didn’t get the tub filled up in time which I would have loved to have in the moment but it was all so fast. I think I was pretty much in transition by the time everyone was there. I kept saying “I can’t do this for 20 hours,” and they assured me that it they didn’t think it would be that long. I pushed for two contractions and he was out! Micah was born at 11:11pm on December 27th at 7lb 5oz. It was so crazy and so different from pushing Luca for over 3 hours and laboring for 20. I felt so encouraged when he was born, thinking the hardest part was over! (In some ways it was)
I laid in bed with Micah for a bit waiting for contractions to pick up again and we all had some small talk. I was watching Leslie’s clock tick by thinking this next baby might actually have a different birthday.
Around 11:50, Leslie was worried about the position of the heartbeat for baby B. The whole pregnancy they’ve both been vertex and never moved from that. She reached up to see if she could feel anything and thought she felt a knee. She wanted me to stand up so she could get a better feel and also to hopefully bring him down more to a footling breech position instead. While standing, Leslie was up to her elbows inside of me and I just happened to be standing in front of a full length mirror and could see the whole thing - not sure if that was for better or for worse. All of a sudden an arm popped out and she requested that an assistant midwife call for EMS. You could tell that her tone shifted and she was worried. The other assistant was using the Doppler on baby B and kept reassuring Leslie that the heart rate was normal. The arm popped right back in and Leslie was continuing to reposition the baby while EMS was on the way. We went through at least 3-5 minutes of her arms in me and me putting all of my weight on my doula for support. Then she wanted me to get on the bed on my hands and knees to reposition. By the time EMS got here, baby B was back into a vertex position. Heart tones were still reassuring but they wanted EMS to stay until the baby was born. There were 5 men and 1 woman standing in our hallway outside of our bedroom watching everything go down and they brought 3 ambulances.
Me and Leslie and one assistant moved into our bathroom to try to get contractions started again and get the baby out. I was leaning against the assistant who was doing an abdominal lift and tuck for me to get baby in a better position.
Titus was born at 12:51am on our bathroom floor. 6lb 6 oz. He had some meconium in his mouth which Leslie removed with a suction bulb before he started breathing. We don’t believe that he got any in his lungs, praise the Lord! After just a minute he started breathing and crying and gaining color, and I got to hold him, the most relieving feeling ever! Titus was on our list of names to choose from after they were born. It means strong, which felt very fitting given the need for strength from baby, all of the birth team, and myself.
I returned to bed with Titus and Vincenzo was still holding Micah while we waited for the placentas to come. It took a while for the placentas to come, even after two shots of pitocin. Probably just from the shock of everything that happened! The team stayed until around 4am. I needed stitches for a 2nd degree tear, and had some swelling but not nearly as much as with Luca. So many things about this birth were so much easier despite it being twins and the emergency.
Luca was sleeping in his room the entire way through. At one point my mom saw him stirring and laid down with him but otherwise he had no idea! Everyone was so loud too.
It was all very chaotic and stressful from the moment Leslie realized that Titus was transverse. Later she told us that all of her training said that would be an immediate transfer and c-section, but she felt so confident that she could turn him and she did! God was so present that night. He kept everyone safe, everyone calm, and he kept us from feeling like it was a traumatic experience. We found out later that our neighbors were outside praying when they saw the ambulances. We are so thankful and amazed at His creation!"
