If you consume caffeine, as most people do, it could be causing your anxiety attacks.

Caffeine is a stimulant which means it triggers the release of stress hormones, the body’s natural response to danger.

Studies have shown that caffeine can more than double the amount of the stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol in your system.

This means that consuming caffeine can trigger your fight or flight response just like a physical attack, or a worrying email from your boss.

Caffeine can cause similar symptoms to anxiety disorders in otherwise healthy people. You may experience an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, panic attacks, mood swings or excessive worries.

This means caffeine in your system might turn a mildly stressful situation such as a traffic jam or a sharp word from your partner into an anxiety attack.

Sunlight and darkness each trigger the release of hormones in the brain. Sunlight triggers serotonin and darkness triggers melatonin. The hormone serotonin is associated with improved mood and helping one feel focused and calm. The effects of serotonin are triggered by sunlight that enters your body through the eye. Sunlight cues special areas in the retina, which triggers the release of serotonin. Without enough exposure to the sun, your serotonin levels can dip. Lower levels of serotonin can pose a higher risk of depression and anxiety.

Many people see cigarette smoking as a way to calm their nerves and deal with their anxiety. In reality smoking ci******es can actually cause anxiety or make it worse. It’s true that ni****ne is connected to your mood in how it affects your brain.

While many smokers believe smoking calms their nerves, what it’s actually doing is relieving the ni****ne withdrawal symptoms. This makes the relief only temporary, so without addressing the root causes of their anxiety, the cycle of anxiety will continue.

Watching the news on a regular basis can negatively impact your mental health and cause anxiety.

One study, for instance, found that people showed an increase in both anxious and sad moods after only 14 minutes of watching TV news. These negative stories can also exacerbate worries about our own personal lives even if they aren't directly related to the content of the news story.

Drinking too much coffee or experiencing caffeine withdrawal can cause you to develop anxiety. This is why it’s important to monitor your caffeine intake and keep yourself from becoming dependent on coffee. If you already have an anxiety disorder and choose to drink coffee, you may run into problems. Caffeine and anxiety both have effects on heart rate and blood pressure.

It's very true that children are impressionable, especially when very young. Parents need to keep in mind how they are behaving around their children, in an effort to raise emotionally balanced individuals.

Dr Lim Boon Leng, a psychiatrist at Dr BL Lim Centre for Psychological Wellness in Singapore, agrees that young children are more susceptible to their parents’ moods than older ones.

“Kids under three are still learning about emotional regulation, so if their parents show emotional instability they may react in a similar way, by crying more frequently and uncontrollably, throwing temper tantrums, or showing excessive fear or anxiety. They may even act more clingy towards their parents, develop phobias, or have problems eating or sleeping.”

Lim adds that, in extreme situations where one or both parents are emotionally unpredictable or have frequent mood swings, the children may become psychologically traumatised and emotionally unstable themselves. These children are at a higher risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders and irregularities in personality.
