Friday Thoughts:

Do you remember the last time you were overwhelmed by emotions or anxiety? I assure you that you are not alone. My anxiety is a daily struggle for me, but it's important to remember that anxiety is not who you are, it's a part of you. Emotions and anxiety don't have to dictate how your day unfolds. The key to self-regulation is practice and self-regulation.

A person's ability to self-regulate plays an essential role in their overall well-being, their immune system function, how they react to others, and how confident they feel under stress. Taking a deeper look at self-regulation, it refers to our ability to control our internal emotions and thoughts to seek solutions. We are adversely affected by this when it comes to our careers, education, or relationships. Without self-regulation, we will be victims of our external experiences. We may feel overwhelmed with thoughts, emotions, and sensations and be unable to cope well with them. The first step is becoming aware of yourself, your sensations, and your thoughts.

The next time you feel overwhelmed by emotions or anxiety, take a moment to pause. Your body is habituated to reacting, which makes it difficult to do the work. Moving your body every day is important. The next time you feel stressed, anxious, or high emotions, ground yourself by doing something for yourself. You can take a break by taking a deep breath, taking a stroll, listening to music, or working out. This will give you more access to new methods of responding the more you do it.

Whenever I feel high levels of anxiety, stress, or emotions, I typically put on my headphones and listen to my favorite playlist, or I take my pup for a walk and enjoy the beauty outside. The move you use when you experience flooding will eventually become second nature, but keep practicing. Self-regulation becomes easier as you practice. You will not regret it!

Do you remember the last time you were overwhelmed by emotions or anxiety? I assure you that you are not alone. My anxiety is a daily struggle for me, but it's important to remember that anxiety is not who you are, it's a part of you. Emotions and anxiety don't have to dictate how your day unfolds.....

How to battle through a dark storm:

When we think of the word "Storm," we automatically associate it with a disturbance of the atmosphere characterized by wind, rain, snow, hail, sleet, or thunder and lightning. Within nature, storms often cause destruction, inconvenience, and limitations. Everywhere in the world, storms create a mess, and sometimes even our own environment is disrupted by them. Have you ever wondered what happens after a storm has passed? In psychotherapy, let's use the metaphor "Storm" for mental health, especially trauma, rather than viewing it as something caused by nature. Depending on your perspective, it may seem as if you are drowning in emotions for some, while for others it can feel as though a tornado of emotions is engulfing you. There are no storms that are more or less severe than the other because each one affects each individual differently, and each individual's story is recognized and validated. The middle of a storm can make you feel hopeless and you can't see any good coming your way, or you wonder if it will ever end? It's a good thing storms don't last forever, since they are only temporary and the sun always shines through them. Storms don't define us; they're just a part of who we are. Instead of focusing on the storm specifically, we might consider this an opportunity to build from scratch what we had in mind all along. Instead of trying to restore the situation to what it was, we can begin again from scratch. Having that mindset allows us to create the life and circumstances in our lives we desire. The goal is to build from the ground up or to use the existing platform to build from the ground up. Rather than thinking about the storm's intent, we should examine why the storm has been introduced into our lives. In other words, the next time a storm arises, you will be able to keep an open mind about what the storm is actually serving to help you accomplish. Even though a storm might seem as though it controls all of your behaviors, emotions, and well-being, you are the one who can rather understand it and react in a positive manner. The road to happiness won't always be smooth, and there will be days you feel defeated, but the most important thing is to know that it is not the end. Sometimes storms open up new opportunities for us to start all over again, to grow stronger, and to find our true selves. Eventually, the sun will shine again, and so will you.

Hello everyone! As a 22-year-old woman, I am passionate about bringing awareness, support, and a safe place to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. Besides recently completing a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, I am a huge advocate for mental health. Like most of us, I have faced numerous obstacles and/or barriers in this life journey. However, some obstacles may be bigger than others and it may seem as if the world is against you. The key ingredients to battling those dark storms are love, support, and safety, but many people are not able to do these things alone. Stigmatization and misunderstanding are prevalent when it comes to mental health. This blog will be a place for me to share not only my personal mental health struggles, but also what I have learned, gained, and realized since then. There will be days when you feel defeated, but it's important to remember that this is not the end of your journey. Learning to embrace life's storms is key to growing in spite of them. The sun will shine again. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD are some of the mental health issues that I struggle with personally. Recently, I have been accepted to graduate school to pursue my passion for Mental Health and become a Clinical Mental Health Therapist. Here, I will share some of my personal stories, thoughts, advice, coping mechanisms, and most importantly, quotes. It will be a pleasure to share and navigate with others who may need a guidepost or just a source of comfort.
