“Health coaching is not regulated and there is not standard for background, education, or training for those acting as health coaches” (An Examination of Health Coaching as a Developing Profession, 2025, PMC12080863).

Cue the eye rolling and head shaking because I just don’t agree.

There actually are standards for health coaching, so let me give you a few things to keep in mind if you have ever wondered whether working with a health coach is right for you.

While it is true that anyone can call themselves a health coach, the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching exists to set standards and competencies for training programs, define a strict scope of practice, and ensure that National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches receive quality continuing education.

Some red flags to look out for when it comes to health and wellness coaches are:

❌Promising quick fixes
❌ Pushing supplements (unless they also hold a medical license that allows them to prescribe)
❌ Lacking training in science based techniques such as motivational interviewing, active listening, behavior change, and goal setting
❌ Not being board certified or at least certified by an NBHWC approved program

If you are considering working with a coach, take the time to ask questions, check credentials, and make sure they are qualified to support you. Choosing the right coach can make all the difference in your health journey.

How are you feeling about your workday versus weekend boundaries?

It can be tough to truly leave work at work on your days off. The good news is that even a few small shifts can make a big difference.

Here are 3 things you can do in 10 minutes or less to switch off your work mind so you can be fully present with your family and the things you want to enjoy over the weekend.

✅ Take a few minutes for a brain dump. Write down five things you want to start your day with on Monday, along with any details you want to remember. This helps your mind relax because you know it is all waiting for you when you return.

✅ Once you have checked your email one last time, turn off notifications until Monday. Give yourself the space to enjoy uninterrupted time.

✅ Create a simple after work ritual that signals to your body that it is time to shift into personal time. This could be closing your eyes for a few minutes, changing into comfortable clothes, or listening to a funny podcast on your way home.

What works best for you when it comes to creating a boundary between work and personal time?

Do you ever find yourself…

✔️Struggling to say “no”?
✔️ Feeling like there’s never enough time for yourself?
✔️ Always putting others first?

If so, these may be signs that it’s time to set some boundaries. Boundaries are essential for both emotional and physical well-being.

This hasn’t always been easy for me either. For years, I was the person who said “yes” to every request and joined every committee. Eventually, it caught up with me, and my health, both physical and mental, took a hit.

Helping others is a wonderful thing. But like anything, it’s possible to overdo it. When that happens, it can leave you too drained to show up for the people and things you care about most.

You’ve probably heard the saying: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” It’s true.

Here are a few questions to reflect on as you start thinking about your own boundaries:

➡️ What do I want more of in my life?
➡️ What’s the worst that could happen if I say “no”? Do I have any real evidence to back that up?
➡️ What’s one small step I can take this week to move in the right direction? (Maybe it’s as simple as turning off email notifications on your phone.)

💭 I’d love to know, what are some of your favorite tips for setting healthy boundaries?

Change is hard.

Changing jobs is hard.

Going through a new stage in life can be hard.

Why is change so difficult? ✅Routine gives us predictability. It lets us run on autopilot so we don’t have to put as much thought into our day as we do when starting something new. There is comfort in the familiar, and when those things shift, it can feel overwhelming and exhausting, both mentally and physically.

One of the great things about health coaching is that it makes starting new, healthier habits feel less overwhelming and more manageable, even if you feel stuck, too busy, or like you have already tried it all.

🔎By asking the right questions, listening in a way you may not have experienced before, helping you use your strengths for better outcomes, and working with you to identify past obstacles and how to move past them, health coaching often becomes the missing ingredient for people who want lasting change.

If and when you are ready to make your habits easier and more sustainable, I am here to help you explore how lasting change can become possible for you.

Has anyone else watched the “Biggest Loser” documentary on Netflix?

Many of the contestants gained the weight back after the show and there was some speculation about changes in metabolism.

But what stood out to me even more were the grueling eight hour workouts and extremely low calorie diets. Several contestants even shared that they had to completely rest for a week or two afterward because their bodies were so exhausted.

Even if those approaches were safe, which they are not, they simply do not work in the real world.

Lasting lifestyle changes start with small steps that build into habits over time.

The best habits are the ones you stay consistent with in everyday life, and still manage at least 70% of the time when your routine gets thrown off, such as during vacations or extra busy weeks.

And the best part is that these changes do not leave you drained and desperate for rest. Instead, they usually give you more energy than you have had in years and help you feel excited about your future.

✅One of the things I help people with is simplifying habits so they turn into permanent lifestyle changes. When you simplify the right areas of your life, you gain the energy and clarity to focus on what matters most: your family, your goals, your passions.

If you want to feel more energized and make your habits easier to stick with, I’m here if and whenever you need support!

Remember when movement was fun and you didn’t even think of it as exercise?

Riding bikes🚲 to the pool in the summer, swimming for hours, and then pedaling back home.

Sledding in the winter, climbing those steep hills again and again in heavy boots and snowpants.

Playing sports or simply walking around town with your friends.

Somewhere along the way, movement started feeling like a chore instead of something enjoyable. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Think about what makes you laugh, feel playful, or forget you’re even moving. When you enjoy the activity, it doesn’t feel forced, and you’re more likely to keep it up.

💭So what’s one fun activity you could try or bring back that “just happens to involve exercise”?

It’s one of the scariest things you can wake up to in the middle of the night.

Our smoke detectors went off last night and it wasn’t a low battery chirp. It was an “Oh my god, is our house on fire?!” alarm.

Luckily, there wasn’t a fire, but after that I was wide awake, wondering why these things always seem to happen late at night or in the early morning hours. Seriously, why?🤷🏻‍♀️

Sleep disruptions like this can leave you feeling groggy, irritable, and drained the next day. While we can’t control when a smoke detector goes off, there are things you can do that make it easier to fall back asleep. Here are some of my go-to strategies.

✔️Try Not to Catastrophize: Remind yourself that you’ve survived a bad night of sleep before. Think about the coping strategies that helped you get through it in the past. This reframe can keep you from adding extra stress to the situation.

✔️4-7-8 Breathing: Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and slowly exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. Repeat as needed. On average, people need about four rounds to feel relaxed enough to drift off.

✔️Read a Print Book: Did you know there are books for adults specifically designed to help you fall asleep? One example is “Bedtime Stories for Stressed Out Adults: Designed to Calm Your Mind for a Good Night's Sleep.”

✔️Not a Reader? Try Another Calming Activity : Journaling, light yoga, or even coloring can work well too.

What else works for you when you wake up in the middle of the night?
