When Temple Grandin started her career, she was interested in animals. She was curious about how they sensed the world and the ways they communicated as a result. Grandin noticed how vocal livestock animals were in corrals when ranchers tried to maneuver them.
Cows are big, heavy creatures and moving them posed challenges for the livestock industry. She thought animal communication might be worth paying attention to and then interpreting.
Her participation in the field wasn’t met with open arms. At the time, women were an uncommon sight at corrals, let alone a young woman with the consistent curiosity of someone with autism.
With her unique attention to detail and visual mind, Dr. Grandin proposed solutions that revolutionized how the animal handling industry, today, corrals and transports animals.
Dr. Grandin’s story showcases the value of neurodiversity, revealing the wealth of knowledge new perspectives can bring to various aspects of life.
