We are hearing more about the new issues with AI... as if we didn't already have a lot to think about when it comes to our personal safety. I just received this good reminder from my bank and wanted to share it with all of you in the event you haven't already started reading about ways to keep your identity safe.
"AI Scams
Scammers are now using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to deceive individuals. By gathering personal information from various online sources, these fraudsters create convincing and personalized scenarios to manipulate victims. They might impersonate family members or friends in distress, using AI-powered voice synthesis to make calls or messages sound incredibly realistic. These scams prey on emotions and urgency, pressuring victims into taking immediate action.
Remember to independently verify any distress claims and never share personal information without confirming the authenticity of the communication.
Bogus Bank Messages
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has identified bogus bank messages as one of the most common text scams. Fraudsters impersonate banks by sending deceptive text messages that appear urgent and demand account confirmation, information updates, or resolution of alleged security issues. These messages are designed to create fear and urgency, leading recipients to disclose sensitive personal and financial details.
Be cautious of unsolicited text messages from unknown sources claiming to be your bank. Avoid clicking on any links or providing personal information in response. Instead, contact your bank directly using trusted contact details to verify the legitimacy of any requests or concerns.
"Walkers"
Another emerging scam involves individuals known as "walkers" who follow bank customers, often targeting elderly or vulnerable individuals. These scammers observe customers while they are at the bank and attempt to exploit their trust and distract them. They may strike up conversations, pretend to offer assistance, or distract customers to steal their wallets, purses, or other valuables.
Be aware of your surroundings and remain cautious when approached by strangers at or near banking premises. Always keep your personal belongings secure and never share confidential information with anyone you do not trust.
To protect yourself from these scams and others:
Be skeptical of unsolicited communications, whether through calls, texts, or emails, especially when they request personal or financial information.
Verify the authenticity of any urgent or distressing claims before taking any action.
Use official contact details provided by your bank to reach out and confirm any requests or concerns.
Regularly monitor your accounts and review bank statements for any suspicious activity.
Keep your personal information private and regularly update your passwords."
