On November 22, 2009 Astronauts onboard the ISS were woken by Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses. The song was played in honor of Flight Engineer Randolph Bresnik who had received news of the birth of his daughter earlier that day.

On November 19, 2005, Japan's Hayabusa spacecraft successfully lifted off from the surface of asteroid 25143 Itokawa. While other space agencies had successfully landed on asteroids the Hayabusa was the first craft developed specifically to land on the asteroid and bring back a sample to be studied.

The Japanese were initially uncertain if the craft had successfully obtained a sample, but choose to send the craft home. Hayabusa, unfortunately, broke up on re-entry, but luckily the container that held the asteroid samples were intact and recovered. The data gained from the Hayabusa mission helped scientists bridge the gap between observations of distant asteroids and the analysis of meteorites on Earth.

On November 18, 1923, Alan Bartlett Shepard was born. Shepard would play an integral part in the Early US space program becoming the first American in space. Unfortunately, his career as an astronaut was temporarily halted due to medical concerns.

Shepard was able to overcome these difficulties and was named captain of the Apollo 14 mission. While on the mission, Shepard became the fifth man to walk on the moon, and the first to hit a golf ball. He continued to serve in the US Navy and was Chief of the Astronaut Office until his retirement in 1974.

On November 17, 1967, Surveyor 6 became the first craft to successfully lift off from a celestial body. The mission was the sixth part of a scouting mission to determine if The United States could successfully land a manned craft on the surface and return it to earth.

The lander represented NASA's fourth successful soft landing on the moon and was able to capture over 30,000 images of the surface. The final task of the mission included a 2.5-second firing of its liquid-fueled engines lifting the craft off the surface before coming to a rest about 8 feet away from the original landing. While seemingly not a huge accomplishment, the launch validated NASA's beliefs that a craft could be sent to the moon and recovered. On November 16, 1974, the Arecibo Message was broadcast into the depths of space. The message was the first attempt to contact extraterrestrial life using radio waves. The message originated from the Arecibo Observatory, which was the largest radio telescope in the world at the time, and was aimed at the M13 star cluster which is approximately 25,000 light-years from the Earth.

The Arecibo Message was designed by Frank Drake of Cornell University with help from Carl Sagan and other astronomers. The contents were an encoded message that contained basic information about the make-up of the universe, our solar system, the Earth, and finally humanity itself.

On Nov 15, 1988, the Buran Program made its first successful orbital flight. The program was initially supposed to be the Soviet answer to the US shuttle program. While the craft was tested extensively in the atmosphere the November 15th mission would go on to be the only successful orbital flight.

The craft performed flawlessly during the mission completing the first uncrewed orbital flight of a space shuttle. In spite of these successes, the program would be shelved due to budget constraints and political instability in the USSR.

On November 12, 2014, the Philae Lander touched down on Comet 67P. Unfortunately, the grappling hooks that were supposed to tether the craft to the comet's surface failed to fire and the lander bounced off the surface rising almost a kilometer off the kilometer before gravity pulled the lander back towards the surface. Philae would bounce off the surface twice before finally settling undamaged in the shadow of a crater.

The problematic landing led to issues charging the craft's batteries. Despite these issues, the lander was able to operate for 2.5 days and did perform some of the planned scientific tasks. Philae found 16 organic compounds, 4 of which had never been found on a comet. As well as, carbon and hydrogen in the comet's atmosphere.
