There is so much conflicting advice out there about appropriate infant weight gain. As lactation consultants, even what we were taught during our training conflicts with both current and past research on appropriate weight gain. We were always taught at least 0.5 to 1 oz a day is appropriate but when you plot a baby who is growing at this rate on any growth chart, the numbers don’t add up. So we decided to take a deeper dive into the research and apply this in clinical practice. Swipe to the last slide to see the trends for appropriate weight gain for each month in the first year of life..
If you have questions about your baby’s intake at the breast, bottle volumes, or overall weight gain, we are always here and happy to help you figure all this out!
