Welcome October! My favorite month of the year!

Happy Fall, Ya'll. My favorite time of the year is here. I am ready to break out my sweaters and ensure I have plenty of firewood. I don't usually partake in pumpkin-flavored coffee, but I did have a pumpkin chai latte, which helped get me in the spirit of the season. Even the weather has cooperated, with temps in the 70s.

I don't know what it is about entering the cooler calendar months that makes me gravitate to my collection of cookbooks. They sit collecting dust eight months of the year, but as soon as it gets cool, out they come. I love a well-appointed cookbook with intriguing recipes and glossy pictures.

The first thing I do I look at the dessert section and then soups, stews, and casseroles. For me, it's all about the comfort food. I don't get much of an opportunity to cook creatively during the week with work and picking up the kids from after-school activities; this is where the slow cooker is a friend. The weekend is when I can devote myself to spending more time in the kitchen creating. I still have not mastered meal prepping, but I think about it often.

The "ber" months are here, and so far they have not disappointed - cool mornings, warm mid-days, and chilly evenings.

This is my favorite time of year; the months leading up to fall and the holidays.

It's time to work on some slow living. One of my goals this month is to go on an autumn spotting walk/drive where we can see the changes. My son and I love to drive, getting lost on back roads and side streets.

Hello August!

The countdown to the beginning of school is on. For ten months of the year, I'm an educator, and there is something about August that gets my creative juices flowing. I dream of colored pencils, Post-it notes, and highlighters. I enjoy shopping for school with my kids and for my classroom.

Not everyone is excited about the start of school; my kids are some of those people. We have seven days left and are going to try to make the most of it.

Peppermint is one of my favorite scents. I love it mixed with eucalyptus in a sugar scrub, room spray, or shower spray to open sinuses and to feel invigorated. Most folks think of it solely in terms of Christmas, but the essential oil offers so much more.

We offer a "Cooling Spray" during the summer months that contains peppermint oil, which helps bring comfort after a long walk, bike ride, or horse lesson.

If you are looking to make your own, here is a "Cooling Spray Light" recipe incorporating ingredients you may already have in your cabinets. It's even better when you keep the spray in the refrigerator for even more relief. Naturally, our version has a few additional benefits, but here are the basics.

At Home Cooling Spray:
Spray or Mister Bottle (volume will depend on what your spray bottle will hold); below is for an 8-oz spray bottle.

1 cup witch hazel or water
1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
10-12 drops of peppermint essential oil. You can adjust the amount as you see fit.

Mix well in a bowl and pour into your spray container. Use on the back of the neck, arms, and chest for a cooling effect. Discontinue use if irritation occurs AND this is for external use only. Do not spray it in your eyes.

Every year, my spouse's side of the family gathers in a magical spot known as "The Swimming Hole" to celebrate family and the Fourth of July. As our kids get older, there is always the concern that they may decide that this tradition "might not be their thing", but their commitment to keeping family connections in an ever-dividing world is refreshing, and I am so proud of them.

Let us remember our friends, family, and appreciate freedom today. Wishing you all a wonderful July 4th Celebration!
