It may appear that individuals who have experienced trauma have emerged stronger, and they may also perceive themselves as such. Nevertheless, this perception is often an illusion created by the defense mechanisms the individual developed to shield themselves from further trauma. Unprocessed and untreated trauma, particularly complex trauma (characterized by prolonged or repeated traumatic experiences), can lead individuals to exist in a perpetual state of survival mode. Their body remains on constant high alert, bracing itself against potential threats. When individuals experience complex trauma, they often lose the ability to feel genuinely safe. To avoid vulnerability, they may present as aloof or unapproachable, overly accommodating, or distant and isolated. These behaviors are common trauma responses, representing unconscious survival mechanisms developed to prevent further trauma.
If you have experienced trauma and struggle with unwanted thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, please do not hesitate to seek help. Recent advancements in trauma therapy, such as EMDR (available exclusively through a trained, licensed therapist such as myself) have resulted in better outcomes for clients and often require less time in theraoy.
