At Higher Grounds, we see firsthand how overwhelming social media can be for teens, especially young girls. While waiting until 18 would be ideal, we encourage families to hold off at least until age 16 before allowing teens their own accounts. This delay gives them time to build resilience, confidence, and healthier offline connections.

Even at 16, boundaries matter. We recommend setting clear screen-time limits and keeping phones out of bedrooms, particularly overnight. Darkness, boredom, and bedroom privacy can lead to risky behaviors. Creating structure around technology use isn’t about punishment—it’s about protecting mental health and giving our teens space to thrive.
