Even if you eat clean and skip alcohol, a late-night snack can trigger silent reflux that lingers all night. If you struggle with acid reflux, having a nightcap close to bedtime can make symptoms significantly worse.

Some foods are especially problematic in the evening. Chocolate, pizza, soda, and fatty meats like hamburgers and hot dogs are among the biggest culprits. Ideally, your final meal shouldn’t be your heaviest of the day, and you should aim to finish eating 3–5 hours before going to bed.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 25 million people (1 in 13) are diagnosed with asthma, costing an estimated $82 billion annually. However, many cases may be misdiagnosed.

Four red flags for asthma misdiagnosis:
1. Trouble breathing in (asthma typically causes trouble breathing out).
2. Shortness of breath without airway obstruction.
3. Chronic cough alone.
4. Asthma medications don’t improve symptoms.

Many acute breathing issues are actually caused by respiratory reflux (LPR), which is often “silent” and occurs without classic GERD symptoms like heartburn. Because this type of reflux is frequently overlooked, breathing problems are often labeled as asthma even when symptoms don’t fit.

In short: trouble breathing out suggests asthma; trouble breathing in may suggest reflux. More accurate diagnosis could reduce unnecessary costs and lead to more effective treatment.

Not Doing Well on Your Meds? Asthma Is an Extremely Common Misdiagnosis. That’s Because Inspiratory Airway Obstruction (Trouble Getting Air IN) Isn’t Asthma; It’s Respiratory Reflux (aka LPR). Your Doctor Should Know this, but Most Don’t!

Respiratory Reflux (LPR) can cause symptoms like postnasal drip, excess mucus, hoarseness, sore throat, chronic coughing, and shortness of breath. Unlike typical reflux, it does not usually involve heartburn or indigestion and is different from GERD.

Respiratory Reflux often affects the airways and may show up as symptoms that don’t immediately seem related to reflux, including asthma-like issues, ear pain, sinus pressure, and voice hoarseness.

Should you do a Reflux Detox? Many commonly misdiagnosed conditions are actually caused by Silent Respiratory Reflux, including shortness of breath, nighttime coughing, laryngitis, snoring, and sleep apnea. In most cases, neither patients nor their doctors realize that acid reflux is the underlying issue.

Respiratory reflux can also worsen or accelerate existing respiratory or lung conditions. Below are ten common and often distressing symptoms—most driven by reflux—that signal the need for a comprehensive antireflux (“Detox”) program.
