Spinal stenosis occurs when the space within the spine narrows, leading to pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Some people experience no symptoms, but others may have pain, tingling, numbness or muscle weakness. Symptoms vary based on which part of the spine is impacted. Lower back pain may occur with cramping in the legs while standing or walking, as well as trouble balancing. Neck pain may occur with numbness, tingling or weakness in the arm or hand. Over time, these symptoms can worsen. Spinal stenosis is most often caused by arthritis.
