Loved representing the Class of 2018 at the Leadership Manhattan graduation celebration for this years class. Leadership Manhattan was an excellent program way back in 2018 when I was a budding community engaged leader. These folks are movers and shakers in the community and some of the greatest leaders I know!

Check out this spotlight featuring yours truly! Happy Mental Health Month!

This month, weโ€™re continuing to center Black Joy, healing, and the clinicians shaping care in our community. ๐Ÿ–ค

Through the Black Joy program, Dr. Jurdene Coleman, founder of Sage & Summit Therapy Consulting, was able to expand access to culturally competent therapy for Black and BIPOC clients, bringing in new clients and helping make therapy feel more reachable for those who may not have otherwise taken that first step.

For her as a new practice owner, it also created space to stay rooted in what matters most, serving her community with intention, care, and alignment. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Stay with us as we continue to uplift the voices, care, and joy shaping our collective healing!

Just wrapped up an inspiring Women in Business event at the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, focusing on adaptive listening. Even as a therapist, Iโ€™m always looking to improve my skills. Key takeaways: Adaptive listening is different from active listening - itโ€™s adjusting your approach based on the situation.
S-support listening,
A-advance listening,
I-immerse listening,
D-discern listening. What type of listener are you? Check out Adaptive Listening by Nicole Lowenbraun & Maegan Stephens.

Finished the day supporting Aunt Mekaโ€™s, a BEFH Business with the most amazing desserts - go try them out!

Are you a Black woman reader looking to connect with other Black women in the community? Join me for the first iteration of Shifting Perspectives Book Club. As you read through the book, I'll share thought provoking prompts and ideas to consider. Then join me in person for an evening of fellowship and conversation with your fellow readers. Spots are filling up fast, don't miss out!

๐Ÿ“š Registration is now open for BEFH Book Club facilitated by Dr. Jurdene Coleman, founder of Sage & Summit Therapy Consulting!

Weโ€™re stepping into a small, intentional reading space centered on Black entrepreneurs and BIPOC community members who want to slow down, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversation through shared reading.

Our first book is: Shifting: The Double Lives of Black Women in America by Charisse Jones and Kumea Shorter-Gooden.

Weโ€™ll move through the book at our own pace, guided by reflection prompts, and then come together in person to connect, share insights, and explore the themes that emerge from our reading.

Limited to 20 participants.

What is happening in Manhappiness?

April 3 - KSU Soccer Coach and n-word disaster
April 22 - NAACP calls on KSU to take action after person on campus appears with racist sign

In less than 30 days we've seen two major instances of racialized ignorance within our community. Comments under these stories range from placating to patronizing and all we can do it watch in disbelief as the people we grocery shop next to and stand beside in the parent pick up line continue to see us as Black people as... not worthy of dignity and respect.

We.Are.Tired.

Take care of yourself today.

My favorite workshop of the weekend was on the integration of Reflexive Leadership and Person of the Therapist. The idea that our past relational experiences are impacting how we show up in stress in our leadership roles. POTT says we must reflect and acknowledge those parts of us and consciously shift how we respond when start to notice those responses within ourselves.

morning we heard from Dr. Stephanie Brooks Dean of the College of Health at Cleveland State University.

My key takeaways:
Communities donโ€™t need us to lead them; they need us to create space for leadership to emerge.

Ask yourself - who benefits from community engagement, am I more visible than the work?
