The birthday girl’s favorite color is turquoise and rainbows are a favorite too.

It’s so damn cold still so I thought these bright, fun, yellow cupcakes with vibrant vanilla frosting would fit the bill and bring some happy bites.

I’m biased but I think they’re super cute. Of course I ate a pack of the Airheads while decorating.

When you want to catch a plane to Tahiti and get out of this grey, freezing, snowless winter of ugly awfulness….but alas, you cannot, so instead continue reading this run on sentence, lay on your bed with a heating pad, close your eyes pretend you’re on one of those huts over the water and stuff your face with happy food. I randomly feel the need to use this post to talk about mental health rather than cakes. I actually started Soul Sugar to bring to light the need to normalize mental health struggles.

So…..seasonal affective disorder:

Do you struggle with it? I think 99% of us who live in cold winter climates absolutely do.

During January and February we are in the thick of it. The sun sets before five. The temperature rarely goes above 40°. January and February can f**k off.

I know this time of year doesn’t help my mental state one bit. Depression; anxiety; sleepiness; sleeplessness; agitation and forgetfulness are all enhanced. Plus I’m transparently pale (buy L’Oréal tan towels) and that just sucks.

I get to stand outside for a total of two hours a day with five-year-olds at my part-time job. The past week it was too icy and cold to go out. It was only the absence of being outside that made me realize how important it is. It literally helps me breathe.

So, some quick thoughts if you aren’t able to spend this much time in the fresh air. Anything can help. Maybe sit outside for 5 minutes. Walk for 10 minutes, no matter the temperature. Buy a viamin D lamp. Take a supplement. Borrow a dog to walk. Do whatever you need to.

EAT A DAMN CAKE with rainbows and sunbeams (might as well stay a little bit on picture topic). Whatever it takes to feel better, do it.

XOXOXO…and hang in there. Even though it doesn’t feel like it some days, spring inevitably comes.
