While they offer great convenience, poor contact lens hygiene can have serious consequences for your vision.

Cutting corners on lens care, like using tap water to rinse your lenses or reusing old solution, can expose your eyes to harmful bacteria and microorganisms. This can lead to painful and potentially sight-threatening infections, like corneal ulcers.

Here are a few simple reminders to keep your eyes healthy and clear:
* Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling your lenses.
* Use fresh solution every time. Never reuse old solution or use tap water.
* Clean your lens case regularly and replace it every three months.
* Never sleep in your lenses unless specifically directed by your eye doctor.

Maintaining good contact lens hygiene is key to protecting your vision. Your eyes are delicate, and small habits can make a big difference.

If you experience any redness, pain, or blurred vision, remove your lenses and call us right away. We're here to help you keep your eyes safe and healthy.

Happy first day of summer! With sunshine finally becoming a more consistent part of our daily forecast, let’s discuss why sunglasses are so important.

While sunglasses are certainly a stylish accessory, they're also crucial for your eye health. Just like your skin, your eyes need protection from the sun's harmful rays.
Here's why rocking those shades is so important:

* UV Protection is Key: The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can damage your eyes over time. High-quality sunglasses block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays, significantly reducing your risk of eye problems.
* Preventing Eye Diseases: Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can contribute to serious eye conditions, including:
- Cataracts: A clouding of the eye's lens that can lead to blurred vision.
- Macular Degeneration: Damage to the retina that can impair central vision.
- Pterygium (Surfer's Eye): A growth on the white part of the eye that can affect vision.
- Skin cancer of the eyelids and intraocular melanoma
* Reducing Glare and Improving Comfort: Sunglasses cut down on harsh glare, making it easier to see clearly and reducing eye strain, especially when driving or enjoying outdoor activities.
* Slowing Down Wrinkles: Squinting in bright sunlight can contribute to wrinkles around your eyes. Sunglasses help you relax your facial muscles, potentially delaying the appearance of those fine lines.

When buying sunglasses, always choose ones that offer "UV400" or "100% UV protection" on the label. The color or darkness of the lenses doesn't necessarily indicate their UV protection level. Polarization isn’t necessary, but it does improve contrast sensitivity and color perception along with reducing glare from reflective surfaces like water and snow.

Make sure your glasses prescription is up to date before buying your next pair of sunglasses. Call us at 781-631-8300 to book your complete eye exam. We look forward to seeing you!

Tired of those pesky "cobwebs" or "specks" drifting across your vision? You're not alone! These are often what we call vitreous floaters, and they're a very common occurrence.

So what are they?

The inside of your eye is mostly filled with a clear, jelly-like substance called the vitreous. As we age, the vitreous starts to shrink and becomes more watery. When this happens, tiny proteins within the vitreous clump together and cast shadows on your retina (the camera film of the eye), which leads to the floaters in your vision.

Are they serious?

For most people, vitreous floaters are a normal part of the aging process and are harmless. They might be a little annoying, but they usually don't impact your vision significantly.

However, it's important to know when to seek help.

While most floaters are benign, a sudden increase in the number of floaters, especially if accompanied by flashes of light, could be a sign of something more serious, like a retinal tear or detachment. These conditions require prompt medical attention to prevent vision loss.

When should you call us?

- Sudden onset of new floaters.
- A significant increase in the number of floaters.
- Floaters accompanied by flashes of light.
- A "curtain" or "veil" effect obstructing your vision.

At Marblehead Ophthalmology, we're dedicated to protecting your precious eyesight. If you're experiencing new or concerning floaters, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with us. We can properly diagnose the cause and ensure your eyes are healthy.

What is a stye and why do we get them?

The tear film our eyes make has a huge impact on the clarity of our vision. It’s made up of a water layer and an oil layer, both of which are very important. The oil layer primarily comes from glands that run along our upper and lower eyelids. If one of these glands gets clogged, it can often lead to a stye.

So what’s the best way to treat a stye? Heat, heat, and more heat. This helps to loosen up the clogged gland so it flows more like oil and less like a tube of toothpaste. Ideally, a warm compress should be applied 3x/day for 10 minutes immediately followed by lid massage. Imagine you’re using your finger to squeegee/express the clogged gland.

Most of the time, the above treatment works well, but if symptoms are worsening, please call 781-631-8300 and Dr. Orenberg would be happy to take a look.

Are you starting to struggle reading small print? Needing more light to see a menu? Wishing your arms were a bit longer to see the details on a prescription bottle?

All of these symptoms tend to start in our mid 40s and they’re due to an unavoidable diagnosis: “presbyopia.”

So why does this happen? The lens inside all of our eyes is flexible when we’re younger, allowing us to focus on distant and near objects. Over time though, the lens gets stiffer, making it more challenging to see up close.

When first trying out readers, we recommend a mild strength (e.g. +0.75 or +1.00). As we age, it’s normal for the strength needed to increase, but if you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call 781-631-8300 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Andrew Orenberg.

Are you suffering from itchy, red, and watery eyes? Many people struggle with these uncomfortable symptoms as pollen counts rise.

Anti-histamine eye drops can help relieve itching (e.g. Zaditor, Alaway, and Pataday), but also using preservative-free artificial tears can make a big difference. Avoid drops labeled "redness relievers," as they can cause rebound redness. Here are a few great choices:

Systane Hydration PF
Refresh Relieva PF Xtra
iVizia

If your symptoms still aren't under good control, please feel free to call our office at 781-631-8300, and Dr. Andrew Orenberg would be happy to assist.
