“Experience Dyslexia™– A Learning Disabilities Simulation” is a hands-on experience designed to increase awareness of the difficulties and frustrations that people with dyslexia encounter daily. Participants rotate among six interactive learning stations that simulate various language-related tasks similar to those encountered in the classroom and workplace. Time has been set aside at each station to discuss experiences.

Brayden Davis wasn’t supposed to end up at MIT. At least, not according to the teachers who dismissed him in elementary school—the ones who saw a boy struggling to read and assumed he was just average. Not according to the system that saw his early learning disability—dyslexia—as a limitation instead of a challenge to overcome. And not, perhaps, even according to the younger version of Davis himself, who once believed he wasn’t cut out to be a student at all.

But this August, Davis, a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill double majoring in biomedical engineering and philosophy and a member of a lab led by APS Assistant Professor Wubin Bai, will pack up his life in rural North Carolina and begin a Ph.D. in medical engineering and medical physics at the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program.

Written Off in Grade School, A Dyslexic Student is Now Headed to MIT to Study the Brain By David DeFusco Brayden Davis wasn’t supposed to end up at MIT. At least, not according to the teachers who dismissed him in … Read more

"People don’t understand that children don’t start kindergarten with a clean slate."

Nadine Gaab, an associate professor at the Harvard School of Education

Developmental trajectories of children with and without reading disabilities start to diverge around 18 months, rather than at 5 or 6 years old.
