✅ in between shoulder blade stretch.
This is something that I came up with just to put tension on this area because people like to do that. Please do not read into this as comprehensive treatment, for that I suggest many more things. This is just one way to stretch in between the shoulder blades, which is an area that people often like to get at but have difficulty. And that brings up my next point.
I do not subscribe to the notion that we cannot stretch certain muscles. Every time I post this type of stretch, I get pushed back from people saying that it isn’t good to stretch these muscles because they are overstretched. This is bogus and here is why. Number one upper cross syndrome was based on literature from years ago and has been shown to be a very poor measuring stick of what we should do in terms of exercise. Why? Because we should exercise all muscle muscles. In other words, upper cross tells us only to strengthen in between the shoulder blades and the front of the neck, etc. Why not strengthen everything? Keep it simple let’s not complicate things.
Next an “overstretched muscle” is a vague description and not supported by the literature. For One to damage a muscle, it would take obsessive stretching which goes way beyond what I am suggesting here. I don’t like putting fear into people’s minds because that promotes fear avoidance behavior, which is far more damaging than any type of stretch.
Next, this is not for a certain condition. I also get pushback from those with hyper mobility issues. If you have issues where it is dangerous to stretch, you should be talking to your provider and not looking online to see which stretch or which isn’t appropriate for you. That goes for many conditions, including post-surgical states or other.
Just have fun. Stretch what feels good. If you are wondering if something is appropriate to you go to your provider first and foremost. Don’t always look at things as a ‘fix’, move to feel good. Move more often. Be well!
