People in Pain

One by one, we slip out of this life.
Not quietly — but unheard.
Warriors drafted into a war we never asked to fight,
battling our own bodies day after day
while begging the system for mercy it refuses to give.

It feels like a silent protest as few have bothered to bear witness.
A forced march, on a well-worn path of failed policy,
toward an early death —
but only after decades of sanctioned suffering.

We are told to advocate, to speak up,
to fight for ourselves
and for the doctors who are punished for helping us.
All while waking in bodies too tired to keep a heart beating,
too weary to breathe,
too consumed by pain to think clearly.

Time keeps moving, even as our circles shrink.
We vanish —
not with headlines, not with protests hot with outrage,
but with a quietness that should shame a nation.
Our last years spent pleading for mercy with the very people
we must turn to for help.

How is this still happening?
How many more will be written off as collateral damage,
sacrificed to a war that cannot be won?
Because it's all too clear at this point
this was never about saving lives.

Will you be next?
Denied medicines you need to live?
Someone you love?

Because the cruelest truth is this:
illness does not discriminate.
Pain does not ask permission.
And the life you know — the one you trust to remain a constant —
can be stolen in an instant
by a diagnosis, an accident,
or a policy that decides your suffering is acceptable.

I have now lost two dear friends very recently whom I've known for over a decade through advocacy.
Leah Brumbelow-Westerfield and now Dee Enst.
The confirmation of Dee's death came today at the same time I'm facing the 4th anniversary of my eldest daughter's death.
The loss and suffering that has been caused by the war on treating pain is immeasurable, and so very little has been done at levels of policy to put an end to this insanity.
I pray all who we have lost are now at peace, free from pain, and watching over us.
May these crimes against humanity end.
We all deserve dignity and ease when faced with severe illness and pain. No one should spend decades fighting for basic compassion and access to pain management unto death.
My heart is broken open again today and laid bare.
Fly free Dee, if you see my girl on the other side, give her a big hug from her momma, she gives the best hugs.
Until we meet again my sweet friend. 💜💔💜

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) proposes to establish the 2026 aggregate production quotas for controlled substances in schedules I and II of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and the assessment of annual needs for the list I chemicals ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine.

It is by powerful design that pain advocacy has been stuck in the mud and spinning its wheels for decades-All while our friends and loved ones die because of draconian policy and practices now firmly entrenched in both government and medical practice.

Many in advocacy think that 'getting through' to our leaders, being heard at a Congressional level, will somehow finally turn the tide. But we've actually been there and done that and things actually got worse for all of us and efforts to keep us silent were employed so that the powerful people behind this atrocity could keep profiting on the back of the so called 'opioid crisis' and the 'opioid' litigation narrative.
Excerpt:
"Siobhan testified before a Congressional committee, but she made little impression. She tried to host a screening for Senate staffers of the documentary she had made, The Chilling Effect; but no one showed up. She held a press conference at the National Press Club, but it was sparsely attended. She learned the hard way that Washington is where pressing issues go to die. She slammed up against the same appalling truth that had brought Sarah Kendzior up short: the people in Washington who could have stopped all this — the people in the inner sanctum of power — already knew. They knew long before Siobhan did; they had their own reasons for letting the brutality continue."

By Lynn R. Webster, MD On July 15, The Washington Post published an editorial urging states to use opioid settlement funds to expand naloxone access and addiction treatment programs. These are sound public health goals. But the editorial’s framing — tying these investments to reparations

Even when given a referral, tens of millions of patients now face a process of psychological and physical abuse, while being thrown into system where cookie cutter alternative treatments are all that is offered. Their suffering is denied, and all just to avoid giving these patients the op**te medicines that work-
Medicines that when used as prescribed are extremely safe and effective.

By Crystal Lindell When I first developed chronic pain back in 2013, I had so little experience with our healthcare system that I genuinely thought that all my doctors would do everything possible to help me, like the doctor that Hugh Laurie played on the TV series House .  The pain I
