💙 Meet Margaret, an active 74-year-old from Negaunee who loves skiing, mountain biking, fat tire biking, hiking and staying on the move.

While crossing U.S. 41 on her bike — in the crosswalk with the walk signal — Margaret was struck by a 3/4-ton pickup truck.

“I was knocked out, then remember hearing people saying to call 911,” Margaret shared. “I could hear the sirens coming.”

EMS quickly arrived on scene and began caring for her. In the midst of the response, Margaret’s neighbor stepped in and called her daughter, Emily — a physician assistant in the emergency department — along with Margaret’s significant other, Don. Even in those first critical moments, Margaret knew she wanted to be taken to UP Health System – Marquette.

“They got me right to the hospital and everything moved so smoothly,” she said.

Upon arrival, Margaret was rapidly assessed in the emergency department and taken for CT imaging and body scans to determine the extent of her injuries. She was treated promptly for pain while teams coordinated her care.

Margaret suffered six broken ribs, a broken leg, bruised knees and a small brain bleed. After several days of monitoring and treatment, she underwent surgery with the orthopedic and neurosurgical teams.

“The immediate assessment and action from EMS, the ER, orthopedic surgery and rehab — everything was incredible,” Margaret said. “Everyone worked together seamlessly.”

A former rehab nurse herself, Margaret later transferred to the inpatient rehabilitation unit, where she spent two and a half weeks rebuilding her strength and independence.

“The rehab team pushed me when I didn’t think I could do it,” she said. “There were moments where I felt anxious, sad and frustrated, especially at night when I was alone. The night shift staff were amazing. They would hold my hand and let me cry when I needed to.”

Today, Margaret is still healing and moving a little slower than before — but she’s already back embracing adventure, in fact she is in Spain and Portugal as we write this for a biking tour and a meditative experience.

“I’m so grateful for the care I received and for everyone who helped me through it.”

From the first moments on scene through every step of her recovery, Margaret’s story reflects the power of coordinated care across EMS, emergency medicine, surgery and rehabilitation.

This EMS Week, we are especially grateful for the first responders and emergency teams whose compassion, speed and teamwork make recoveries like Margaret’s possible. 💙
