I had the pleasure of supporting a local retreat facilitator this weekend through offering a Sound Bath experience for her group. It was held at Indigo Nature Retreat in Old Fort, NC, which is a beautiful retreat center nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Pisgah National Forest. It’s one of the most peaceful settings you can imagine.

The tones of the crystal bowls were accompanied by the soothing sound of the river flowing right outside our space and the cleansing rain that joined in part way through. It was such an honor to be able to add an additional layer of relaxation and self care to their retreat. This group was so kind and welcoming, too.

Interested in adding sound healing to your next retreat or event? I would be happy to chat with you about creating an unforgettable experience for your group that is grounding, restorative and unique to your needs.

The ferry ride to Whidbey Island is so special. Surrounded by the deep blue sea, you view the North Cascade mountains, Camano Island and maybe even some wildlife along the way during the brief 20 minute crossing.

It's a short trip, but long enough to feel that you are arriving someplace new. No matter the weather, I always step out on the open air deck. I am called to take in the fresh air and enjoy the views of both where I'm headed and where I've been.

It's a clear invitation to pause that we don't always find in everyday life, and a ritual I look forward to every visit.

I'm headed back to the island in June for my final west coast retreat of 2024. We'll gather at Aldermarsh Retreat Center, on the cusp of the summer solstice, June 14-16. The days will be bright and sunny (fingers crossed), but the island won't feel the busyness of summer just yet. In my opinion, it's an ideal time to visit.

Jennifer Weston of Sunbreak Massage will join me, leading a self massage/myofascial release session during the weekend. She also has one onsite private massage appointment still available to book during free time.

Summer can be such a busy time. We can help you slow down. Schedule this retreat weekend for yourself: grounding movement, guilt free relaxation, nurturing self care practices and nourishing meals.

Visit michellebefus.com/retreats to learn more about the schedule and see what rooms are still available. We can't wait to welcome summer with you!

Leading yoga retreats has always been a highlight for me as a teacher. I have been holding retreats for more than a decade, and I love that my events attract all types of people: yoga teachers, both students new to yoga and those with an established practice, and students looking to reconnect with their practice and themselves.

I was delighted to read this testimonial from a yoga teacher who attended one of my retreats for the first time last year:

“Michelle Befus is a gifted, inspiring teacher and retreat leader. Michelle’s warm, easy going spirit, creates a relaxed setting where everyone feels welcome and comfortable. The yoga classes are creative experiences that feed mind, body and soul. I especially loved the Yoga Nidra and Crystal Singing Bowl Sound Healing class. The retreat was well organized, the schedule a perfect balance of yoga practice, health/wellness group experiences, free time and opportunities to schedule a massage. The location was beautiful, accommodations were lovely and the food was delicious. The weekend was truly a magical, life changing experience and I plan to make Michelle’s retreat an annual self-care event for me!”

I still have a few spots available for my upcoming Spring Awakening Retreat on Whidbey Island, March 15-17. If you’ve been thinking about it, now is the time to register! One massage appointment is still available to book with Sunbreak Massage during free time, and we’ll be firing up the onsite wood burning sauna this year since many of you have requested it! 💆🏻 🔥 🧘🏽‍♂️

Join us for a weekend of mindful movement, intentional stillness, time in community and plenty of space to rest and recharge.

This was the setting for a sound healing event I had the honor of facilitating a couple weeks ago for the Creston community in Black Mountain, NC.

18 people from the community came together on a Tuesday evening to connect, relax and restore. Some had experienced sound healing before, and others experienced it for the first time through this event. It was both fun and meaningful for me to connect with this group in such a beautiful way. 💫

If sound healing is something you’d like to offer at your event or group retreat, let me know. I will create an unforgettable experience for your group that is grounding, restorative and unique to your needs.

Pranayama is defined as the extension of breath, or the regulation of breath.

An intentionally sequenced movement practice followed by a pranayama practice is a doorway inward.

One’s attention completely shifts, in an effortless and almost magical way.

Pranayama is not about breathing more - it’s about experiencing effortless presence.

Deepen your practice with me over the course of 3 classes, February 5, 12 and 19 at Black Mountain Yoga . Find more information and register here: https://blackmountainyoga.com/workshops/

DISTRACTION is everywhere these days. For example, today I went on a social media platform, looking for something specific. I immediately got distracted by something in my feed (cat videos), which led me down a path of distraction for an unknown amount of time. Finally, I completely forgot what I was looking for in the first place, and continued following my ignorant bliss of never ending cat photos and videos that were coming across my little screen……until I caught myself. Anybody else relate? 🙋🏻‍♀️🐈‍⬛🐈

There are so many things here to distract us, all fighting for our attention. It’s just ridiculous, and can feel so noisy.

With this in mind, I’ve created a 3 week series to uncover a deeper sense of quiet at Black Mountain Yoga. We’ll study subtle practices that cultivate focus and ease by first getting to know the anatomy and natural tendencies of our breathing. Then we’ll move gently and intentionally to prepare the physical body for specific breathing practices (pranayama) that are soothing and relaxing for the nervous system. Finally, I’ll introduce the art of distributing our energy/prana throughout the body through the understanding and use of the bandhas, offering another tool to help calm the mind that you can do anytime/anywhere.

These are life skills that can benefit everyone, so all are encouraged to join. More information can be found below, with details at www.MichelleBefusYoga.com/workshops.

// Moving Into Stillness : A Pranayama Immersion // February 5, 12 and 19 - 2:00-3:15pm at Black Mountain Yoga //

Now let’s see if I can get out of here before more cat videos take over my attention…..

Restorative Yoga has a compounding effect that goes beyond the time spent in the actual poses on the mat. Neurologically, it strengthens our ability to move from a place of stress reactivity to stress responsiveness.

We use props and warmth to create conditions of physical comfort, ease and safety. We create a condition where we are more comfortable resting with ourselves. Overtime, the practice stimulates creativity, mental clarity and helps reduce reactivity.

Join us at Black Mountain Yoga this Friday, December 15th, for a unique restorative experience. Anisha Desai will lead you through grounding restorative yoga postures, while I offer a crystal singing bowl sound healing to further soothe your nervous system.

In the middle of what is often a hectic month, take some intentional time to rest and restore. More info and registration can be found at www.BlackMountainYoga.com/workshops

I often find myself moving at the pace of the mind, rather than the pace of the body.

While the “high” of over scheduling and keeping busy may feel initially satisfying (thanks to neurotransmitter dopamine), it isn’t sustainable long term.

When practicing Yoga Nidra and Restorative Yoga postures, we’re giving ourselves permission to spend an intentional, structured amount of time in a state of focused rest. The body is relaxed in a reclined position, with no need to stay strong, alert or even fight against gravity. The brain can take a break from processing external stimuli and instead focus on consolidating memories and integrating sensory data.

This time of intentional rest develops our tolerance for patience and creates an opportunity to develop awareness around our personal behaviors of reactivity versus healthy responsiveness.

Interested in experiencing this type of powerful, intentional rest? Join me for Deep Rest: Yoga Nidra + Sound Bath at Black Mountain Yoga , this Friday November 17th at 5:30pm. Find more info and registration at www.BlackMountainYoga.com/workshops

2023 has been an amazing year of COLLABORATION for me. I have had the opportunity to partner with so many amazing women through various retreats, workshops and sound healing events. With each partnership, our strengths have been seamlessly complementary, allowing us to create experiences that are uplifting, healing and simply magical.

One of the amazing women I was lucky enough to collaborate with this year is pictured here - Jennifer of Sunbreak Massage. I can’t wait for her to bring her magic back to my Spring Retreat on Whidbey Island next March. Are you free to join us?

Registration is NOW OPEN for my Spring Awakening Retreat, March 15-17, 2024 at Aldermarsh on Whidbey Island, WA. A few rooms have already been booked, but there is still plenty of room for you to join.

And good news - we’ll have the soothing sauna in the woods fired up for use during free time! Jennifer has a few massage appointments still available and Aria will be, yet again, nourishing us throughout the weekend.

We’ll welcome the Spring season through a weekend of yoga, rest, delicious food and self care.

Information can be found at www.MichelleBefusYoga.com/retreats, or contact me directly with any specific questions. I look forward to gathering on this beautiful island with many of you again.
