Most of us know of or have lost someone close due to drug addiction. Even at the young age of 10 Ava knows of how devastating this evil epidemic can be to her friends, family, and community. She has seen this as a major need in our area and has chosen this to be her birthday mission project for this year. In PA, 8-9 people die every day from an overdose and since 2000 there is a 89% increase of overdoses. We believe that “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Philippians 4:13” and therefore Ava has chosen to support the N.E.W.S Worthy Network, based in Altoona, who are raising money for a Christian based women’s transition house. "His House" will be the first home that will be for women. When the timing is right, there will be a house for the men as well. The home will house up to 10 women for 9-12 months. They will learn the Biblical 12 Steps and attend Bible Study and church. They eventually have to have employment and a percentage of the checks will go to the home to sustain it. They will have another portion that is put aside for their graduation for their own apartment. Certain criteria will be allowed, such as approved Christian based music, but It is about the basics in life, how to survive, learning to be responsible, and maintaining recovery. Women had an increase of 24% for incarceration of a drug offense since 1986. We believe this house can be “a way of escape” that is described in 1 Corinthians 10:13 “…God is faithful and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
Ava will be starting her walk the day after she turns 11 on Aug. 5th at 7am at the Pyramid Healthcare Altoona Detox and Inpatient Treatment Center (1894 Plank Rd, Duncansville, Pa) and ending it 16 miles later at her church in Curryville, Pa (Curryville Church of the Brethren, 1529 Curryville Rd, Curryville, Pa) See walking route in the link posted. She will be collecting money from sponsors to donate toward her walk to help make this house a reality for the many women in our area so desperately in need of our help by way of a Savior. Ways to sponsor her:
-Send a check written out to N.E.W.S Worthy Network to Ava Whisker, 1720 Raystown Rd, Everett, Pa 15537
-directly deposit money at any First Commonwealth Bank under the N.E.W.S. Worthy Network’s account
-https://www.gofundme.com/news-worthy-network (includes a small fee to donate)
This by no means will be an easy walk, but it will be a temporary hardship. The journey to recovery for an addict is very difficult and a long battle. We are called to ‘build each other up” in 1 Thessalonians 5:11. Let us show those who need it the most that we care and that there is hope thru Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Please pray for this walk and the lives this transition house will touch.
