3 Tips for Training After 40 by Danny Foley https://www.strengthcoach.com/.../3-Tips-for-Training...

"I haven't quite reached the hill myself yet, however hitting 30 somewhat recently has shifted my perspective on my training from “how hard can we go today” to “I wonder how long I can do this s**t for.” A few years back, I witnessed one of the most impressive physical feats I've ever seen in person, and something I'll remember for the rest of my life. One of Tim's (senior) athletes came to him one day with a short-term goal in mind, saying he wanted to bench 315 and do 10 pull-ups for his 70th (yes, 70th!) birthday. I watched closely across the months leading up to his day, and honest to god, I watched a 70-year-old man do exactly what he said he wanted to do: bench 315 lbs. and perform 10 strict, military standard pull-ups. I've never been so amazed on a training floor, and I've put my fair share of hours in by this point"...

I am not a pistol fan.

We never do pistols but, we do lots of one leg squats.

A pistol is a variation of a one leg squat. A one leg squat is not a pistol.

This is a top 5 exercise in my book for anyone. Single leg RDL fits in well as a primary strength option or as an accessory for bilateral lower body movements. The more I grow as a coach the less I look at this a corrective (I rarely use the term anymore)
The ability to hinge at the hips is an essential one and most of us ought to be able to do it on one leg. Even higher necessity for someone who runs, jumps, or carries things for sport (leisure or competitive) at home and for work.
70lb shown. My ipsilateral goal is 50% of bw (174-179) for 10 reps

Pendulum Squats
Very nice exercise if sparing the low back is necessary or if a barbell squat is out.
This specific machine from has a platform that is adjustable so varying ranges of ankle mobility can be accommodated.
Currently in my program at 3 sets of 8-12

Shoulder Press is my go-to machine for shoulder pressing.
What I really like is the adduction closer to the top of the movement. Just like with chest pressing we want to bring the humerus (upper arm) in towards the middle of the body. I had been doing more barbell pressing than anything else which of course limits a bit of that adduction.
Since adding that ROM through this movement and a few others I’ve seen continued growth in my deltoids and seem to have happier elbows and wrists.
Give this machine a go next time you’re working shoulders
