From plant to skin 🌿

This is what herbal skincare really looks like behind the scenes.

Fresh herbs and flowers are carefully dried, weighed, and slowly infused into oils, like mugwort, comfrey, and lavender before ever becoming a finished product.

Every jar and bottle begins here in my kitchen, with real plants and time doing their work.

These are some of the dried flowers and herbs I use to create my herbal facial serum, slowly infused and made in small batches here in East Tennessee.

Not all tallow balms are herbal medicine.
And that distinction matters.

Lately, I’ve noticed a surge in tallow skincare made with only three ingredients:
tallow + jojoba oil + essential oils.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s important to understand what it is and what it isn’t.

Most of these formulas are fat based cosmetics, not herbal formulations.

Here’s the difference 👇

🌿 Essential oils are aromatic compounds.
They affect scent, mood, and sensation, but they are not whole-plant medicine.

🌿 Herbal-infused oils extract fat-soluble constituents from the plant itself, things like carotenoids, phytosterols, resins, and ant-inflammatory compounds that actually interact with the skin barrier and tissue.

Infusing herbs into oil takes:
• time
• plant knowledge
• understanding moisture content
• formulation skill
• patience

It’s slower. It’s quieter. And it doesn’t photograph as flashy.

Which is why many creators skip it.

Tallow + jojoba + essential oils is:
✔️ fast
✔️ shelf-stable
✔️ easy to make
✔️ easy to sell

But herbal oil infusion is where the medicine lives.

This isn’t about superiority, it’s about transparency.

If you’re seeking:

Then whole-plant infused oils matter.

I’ll never forget signing up for oil class with Kami McBride in 2020 and the feeling of joy I felt making my first ever herbal infused oil (the right way 😉).

St. John’s wort oil was my first foray into herbal infused oils and it quickly opened up from there! Since then I have infused thousands of ounces of oil and created a little business from all of this.

Now I specialize in balms, butters, salves and I still do
love my infused oils, even if they haven’t caught on in the mainstream world yet. They are integral for keeping my nervous system regulated and I wish more people knew how amazing they are to use every day!

You don’t have to take a tincture or chug tea all the time to get herbs into your body. You can rub yourself down with herbal infused oils every day, and you will be delivering herbs directly into your bloodstream via your largest organ: your skin.

I plan on sharing more in this space this year and showing more behind the scenes of my process of how I create my products! I will also be opening up oil class to teach herbalists and anyone else who’s interested in learning how to create their own herbal oil apothecary. Whether you are an experienced Herbalist or a beginner, this will up level your holistic lifestyle! Stay tuned!
