On this date 96 years ago, work started on the Edison Memorial Fountain in Grand Circus Park, on Aug. 29, 1929.

The fountain honors inventor Thomas Edison and his achievements, and was Detroit's contribution to Light's Golden Jubilee, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Edison's invention of the electric lamp.

The new fountain replaced the Guyser Fountain, which the Detroit Free Press called a "dribbling puerile bowl."

The plaque lists Oct. 21, 1929, as the date of dedication, but that was the day of the actual jubilee celebration. Mayor John C. Lodge and others unveiled it and lit it up for the first time at a ceremony a few days earlier, on Oct. 18.

The lights were turned on in Edison's memory during his funeral in 1931.

After repairs, the fountain was rededicated Oct. 18, 1984. New lighting, jets, and controls were installed in 1998.

Every Michigander has memories of hotels, resorts, and clubs "Up North,” whether you've stayed at them, played at them, or worked at them. The roots of Michigan's hospitality industry run deep, as people were traveling north long before there were highways to take them there. Join us for a presentation that peers into the life and times of the remarkable men and women who built the very first hotels and sporting clubs at Grand Lake, starting in the 1870s. Our speaker, Janet Young, will trace their evolution to the 1940s - through the turn of the century, the invention of the automobile, and two world wars in the breakout session “Vintage Resorts: Up-North’s Pioneer Vacationers.”

Don’t miss this presentation at this year’s Michigan History Conference in Alpena on September 26-28! Learn more about the conference at https://hsmichigan.org/programs/conferences/michigan-history-conference
