It was a great experience to present at CONEXIONES in Mexico to many colleagues, sharing our real-world experience with Cladribine tablets in Hispanic patients with Multiple Sclerosis.
Real-world data matters—especially for populations underrepresented in clinical trials. Our cohort highlights effectiveness, safety, and the importance of generating evidence that reflects the patients we serve.
Proud to contribute to advancing more equitable, culturally relevant care in MS/neuroimmunology.

Andrea Torres was stepping into an important chapter of her life when symptoms linked to autoimmune encephalitis began changing her day-to-day. What started as unexplained memory loss later became seizure activity, leading Andrea and her family to seek answers and a path forward.

After consulting with physicians outside the region, Andrea was referred to specialists at DHR Health. Her care brought together a team of experts including Dr. R. Alejandro Cruz, Dr. Leonel Estofan, Dr. Juan Torres-Reveron, and Dr. Eduardo Estevis who worked together to better understand what was happening inside her brain.

At times, Andrea experienced multiple seizures in a single day. Through advanced monitoring, including a surgical EEG that allowed doctors to map seizure activity directly from the brain, the team identified the exact area responsible for her seizures.

In September 2025, Andrea underwent surgery to treat the source of her seizures and is now seizure free. She returned to work within a month of surgery and continues rebuilding her independence as her memory improves.

At DHR Health, advanced neurological care and a collaborative team of specialists make it possible for patients to receive life-changing treatment right here in the Rio Grande Valley.

Yesterday I was in Hidalgo County filming with Roberto Alejandro Cruz, M.D. for The Long Goodbye, my upcoming documentary on Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Dr. Cruz is board-certified in Neurology and the only fellowship-trained neuro-immunologist and multiple sclerosis specialist in the region. With his addition to the DHR Health Neurology Institute and Infusion Center, the Rio Grande Valley now has access to some of the latest disease-modifying therapies for neurological conditions right here at home.

His training spans neuroimmunology, neuro-ophthalmology, and MS research. He completed his medical degree at Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, a neuro-ophthalmology research fellowship in Houston, a neurology residency at LSU Health Sciences Center where he served as Chief Resident, and a second fellowship in neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis at Dell Medical School in Austin.

But today wasn’t just about credentials.

It was about the future.

Every time I go deeper into this subject and sit across from professionals like Dr. Cruz, I leave with something I didn’t expect when I first began this journey: hope.

Hope that earlier detection is improving.
Hope that science is advancing.
Hope that prevention is becoming part of the conversation.
Hope that families may not have to face this alone forever.

Alzheimer’s and dementia are complex. They touch nearly every family in America in some way. But the more I learn, the more I see that brilliant minds are working tirelessly behind the scenes to change the trajectory of this disease.

The Long Goodbye is not just about loss.

It is also about progress.

And today reminded me that the future of brain health may look very different than the past.
