I’m starting a new series where I share a movie every Monday that could provide you with some therapeutic insights for your life! There is so much about media that can be used as a positive tool if we know how to engage with it properly! For the first post of this series, I wanted to talk about the film Beautiful Boy (2018). This film was first shown to me by a teen client when I worked in residential treatment. They had read the book based on the main character’s true life experiences and wanted to watch the movie to help me to understand what substance abuse was like for them and how it affected their family relationships, particularly with their parents. When we discussed this movie in family therapy, the parents and their teen were able to understand and share new perspectives that they weren’t able to put into their own words to share with each other before.
Content warning: parents may want to screen this before watching it with their kids!
I am in awe of how well the actors, writers and producers of this film depicted the emotional and relational struggles that occur in families experiencing addiction. I am also grateful for the vulnerability of Nic Sheff and his father, David Sheff, in being willing to share their story so that others can learn from their experience and not feel alone in their own struggles. If this film resonates with you and/or you or your family member are experiencing problems with addiction, I’m here for you and would love to help you on your recovery journey. If I am not local to your area, please still feel free to reach out so that I can provide you with resources to get you started in your own therapeutic process!
