Happy movie Monday! I hope everyone is enjoying Labor Day! I missed last Monday but of course the next post in this series was going to be about the sequel to Inside Out! Inside Out 2 (2024) is AMAZING as far as opening up a way for parents to talk to their teens about their emotions! I sat in the theater and wished I could have been a therapist hired to consult on this film. I loved the way this movie depicts the formation of core beliefs and how they influence our experiences and relationships in real time. Everyone should watch this movie!
Have you seen Inside Out 2? Tell me your thoughts in the comments below! 🤍

Back at ya with another movie Monday! Let’s talk about Inside Out (2015)! This one may seem obvious (and if any of the kids that I have previously worked with see this post, they will roll their eyes at me 😂). Of course this movie has some great therapeutic insights! It’s a movie about emotions! It’s a great movie for kids to learn about how their emotions look on the inside and on the outside. What I really want to talk about is some of the choices made by the production team that can help us understand our emotions on a deeper level!

If you look at each of the emotions, there are a few that seem to have a core color while also wearing a small element of another emotion’s color. Joy has blue hair and a green dress, Disgust wears a purple scarf, and Fear wears a red tie. I like to point this out when I’m working with kids because a lot of the time, what our emotions look like on the outside might actually be hiding what we are feeling on the inside. This movie is a helpful visual tool that can help parents to understand their child’s complicated emotions, especially during the teen years. More on that next week. 😏

I’m sure a lot of you have seen this movie, what are your thoughts on what you learned from this film? Tell me about it in the comments below!

I’m starting a new series where I share a movie every Monday that could provide you with some therapeutic insights for your life! There is so much about media that can be used as a positive tool if we know how to engage with it properly! For the first post of this series, I wanted to talk about the film Beautiful Boy (2018). This film was first shown to me by a teen client when I worked in residential treatment. They had read the book based on the main character’s true life experiences and wanted to watch the movie to help me to understand what substance abuse was like for them and how it affected their family relationships, particularly with their parents. When we discussed this movie in family therapy, the parents and their teen were able to understand and share new perspectives that they weren’t able to put into their own words to share with each other before.

Content warning: parents may want to screen this before watching it with their kids!

I am in awe of how well the actors, writers and producers of this film depicted the emotional and relational struggles that occur in families experiencing addiction. I am also grateful for the vulnerability of Nic Sheff and his father, David Sheff, in being willing to share their story so that others can learn from their experience and not feel alone in their own struggles. If this film resonates with you and/or you or your family member are experiencing problems with addiction, I’m here for you and would love to help you on your recovery journey. If I am not local to your area, please still feel free to reach out so that I can provide you with resources to get you started in your own therapeutic process!

Sunday scaries got nothing on you! This chart is to help you make a plan for intuitive and intentional self-care throughout your week! See an explanation and directions for its use in my story! Self-care doesn’t have to take hours and we should be practicing regularly, not just on weekends! What are some of your favorite things to do for self-care? Tell me in the comments! 🤍
