Doing another 5 day Prolon (pro-longevity fast). I certainly do not enjoy doing them but its only 5 days and then I am good for another 4 months. Getting rid of my belly fat motivates me to do it initially but when the going gets tough to finish the fast, the longevity benefits keeps me strong!

I made it! Even while traveling. This is my "last supper" of the Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet this time around. Feeling good to get another round of cellular rejuvenation under my belt. And a nice side effect is that I am down 4 lbs and lost an inch around my waist. Looking forward to my white bean salad with chopped veggies, roasted walnuts, olive oil, and feta tomorrow as my transition meal. Packed it all in my suitcase of course! I would have cried if the salad didn't make it through airport security......but it did!

Balancing Inflammation is another important aspect of Nutritional Biochemistry to take into account. Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants (e.g., nuts, berries, and fish) can help balance the inflammatory response which are important in managing chronic conditions.

Here are some ways you can reduce inflammation through diet:
-Eat more fruit and vegetables (at least 5 cups a day combined)
-Eat a more plant based protein: leaner animal proteins, beans, nuts, whole grains, and grass fed or wild red meats
-Get your high quality fibers in: whole grains, chia, fruit and veggies
-Reduce your sugar intake
-Limit or avoid alcohol completely
-Limit trans fats (hydrogenated oils): margarine, deep fried and processed foods
-Drink anti-inflammatory drinks: green, white, and black teas; coffee

One of my favorite cookbooks by Dr. Andrew Weil, GOOD FOOD FAST FOOD, incorporates an anti inflammatory approach in each of its recipes. The recipes are also quick and easy which makes eating healthily pretty simple even on a weeknight.

When discussing Nutritional Biochemistry one must consider their gut health as it is the gateway to proper nutrition. A healthy microbiome encourages nutrient absorption, prevents inflammation, and also can boost immunity.

Here are some ways one can encourage good gut health:
-eating a variety of foods especially foods with fiber (about 35 grams a day)
-daily physical exercise
-good quality pre and probiotics daily
