Richard Stephen Markin

On November 16, 2025 in Medford, Oregon, our world sadly lost a son, father, brother, and uncle, artist, traveler, chef, and storyteller Richard Stephen "Steve" Markin after 65 years.Steve was born in Toledo, Ohio near the shores of the Great Lake he loved and frequently returned to throughout his life. He yearned to travel even as a young man, driven by his innate curiosity and always ready to take the next road, and this led to U.S. Naval service in the Mediterranean and countless opportunities throughout our country, chances to see and experience things most of us only imagine. It also allowed him to be close to the natural world that brought him peace. Camping, fishing, exploring, Steve loved the outdoors and never shied from the opportunity to spend a night outside in the woods or the desert or the beach. This connection extended to the animals around him. Steve appreciated and respected all living creatures, from the massive brown bear to the tiny scorpion, from the wild stallion to the trudging possum, from the reptiles of the swamps to the stags of the forest. Above all, he never met a dog he didn't love, and every dog he met, whether his own pets to the mangy stray, returned this affection. His adventures around the country provided endless fodder for tales he would share with family and friends. Like most fishermen, Steve was a consummate storyteller, weaving tales that entertained and surprised anyone who would take the time to sit and share one of his expertly cooked meals. But delicious food and wild stories were not Steve's only creations or the extent of his talents. He could build and repair anything... literally anything. If a house needed a new roof, an engine needed a new part, or a watch needed a new gear, Steve could repair it. Yet his calloused hands and overt bravado did nothing to hide his innate sensitivity and artist eye. Steve could find beauty in everything around him, even in places others might discard or ignore. He could see and carve out the butterfly trapped in an old block of wood. He could hear the ancient natural song of water lapping under a trash-strewn bridge. He could feel the value in every person he met, even those that the world might have abandoned, and never hesitated to put out a hand or cook a warm meal or share what he could with a fellow traveler.Steve, glasses peering out from under an ever-present ball cap, crooked grin on his face, would read these words and laugh, shrug them off, say they must be for someone else, and chide anyone who cries for him. In this humility, though, he could never understand how much he meant to the lives of the family and friends who knew him. Because he is gone, somewhere, tonight, a stray dog loses a crust of bread and a pat, a sunset goes unappreciated, and a story of an unbelievable adventure goes untold. Most of all, those who love him find the day a little less funny, find a lost nugget of advice based in deep life experience, find an empty space in a too-quiet night, find a tear rolling down a cheek with no one there to tease a smile and reject this grief.Steve, adventurer, outdoorsman, craftsman, woodcarver, troubadour, father, brother, uncle, and friend...you are missed and loved more than you ever knew or accepted in life. Find the rest and peace you were always seeking, and keep the coffee warm so we can all sit around the table and swap tall tales when we meet again.Steve is preceded in death by father and mother, Larry and Joyce McGhee Markin, older brother, Larry “Slim” Markin, Jr. and beloved grandmother Hazel Harness McGhee. He is survived by child Danny (Emily) Markin, brother David (Shalene) Markin, sisters Kimberly Wieling, Cheryl Pinney, Linda Hunt, Wendy Sipes, and Elizabeth (Matthew) Hysell, along with over forty nephews and nieces, and friend and traveling companion, Jacki Manders.Memorial Service will take place at a later date.

Barbara was born on June 27th, 1939 in Madera, California, to Oscar and Louise Kelley. One of Barbara’s proud accomplishments was her work at NASA. Barbara worked for many years for Jackson County and made many friends during her time there. While working at the County, Barbara raised 5 children that she loved dearly.

Mama was known for her kindness, compassion, and deep devotion to her family. She made friends easily. There aren’t enough words to describe her. Mama exuded loveliness. She had the best sense of humor. Everyone wanted to be around her and she welcomed all. She loved yellow roses, lighthouses, singing gospel music and the coast. Mom was the last of 9 siblings. She missed them and her own mama and daddy so very much. We will miss her every day but take comfort that she is with her loved ones. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved daughter, Denine who was taken far too soon. We would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to her caregiver, companion and granddaughter, Lindsay Copeland who cared for her nearly every day over the last 3 years. Thank you to her team from Providence hospice.

A memorial service will be held January 3rd, 2026 from 11 am-1pm at 3955 S. Stage Rd at the club house in her community. Her service will be open house style and a potluck lunch will be served.

Eli John Weaver

Eli John Weaver, 51, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, in Medford, Oregon, due to health-related issues. He had traveled to Oregon to spend meaningful time with his family, and his final days were filled with love and support from those closest to him.

Born on May 25, 1974, in New Mexico, Eli was the beloved son of Marie Hurley (Grindell) and Ike Weaver. From a young age, Eli possessed an incredible curiosity about the world and a natural talent for mastering whatever he set his mind to.

Eli was also an athlete from a very young age. He loved both playing and watching sports, especially soccer, which remained a lifelong passion. Growing up, he wrestled, played high school football, and continued to enjoy various sports as an adult. Whether on the field or cheering from the sidelines, Eli brought enthusiasm, dedication, and heart to every athletic pursuit.

He enjoyed a long and dedicated career in research, working for Dr. Vance Lemmon at Case Western Reserve University and later at the University of Miami. His commitment to scientific advancement was matched only by his dedication to helping others. His skills were endless—whether renovating his and Cassie’s home in under a year while commuting between Fort Myers and Miami, or showing up for neighbors in need during Florida hurricanes, going door to door to make sure everyone was safe and prepared.

A lifelong learner, Eli had a passion for knowledge, staying current on world events and maintaining a deep love for history. He was truly a jack of all trades: if something sparked his interest, he became an expert with ease. His natural ability and determination made him exceptional in everything he embraced.

Eli is survived by his loving wife, Cassandra (Cassie) Furst; his mother, Marie Hurley (Grindell), and stepfather, Dennis Hurley; his father, Ike Weaver, and stepmother, Kathy Weaver; his brother, Daniel Weaver, and spouse Kimberly Walker Weaver; his sisters, Aimee Weaver and spouse Jason Bennett, and Grace Herring and spouse Travis Herring, and their children Hanna and TJ; as well as many extended family members who loved him deeply.

Eli will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, humor, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. His presence made the world brighter, and his absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.

A celebration of Eli’s life will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to come together to honor his memory and the beautiful impact he had on so many.

David Lynn Steensen

David Lynn Steensen—“Dave” to most, “Davey” to some, and “Sherpa” to his dad on the hiking trail—was born on September 5, 1957, in Shelton, Washington, to Paul and Shirlee Dee Steensen. From an early age, he loved the outdoors, especially long hikes with his father, which earned him that enduring “Sherpa” nickname. He also loved skiing and often said, “the world is better with snow in it.”Dave studied geology at Western Washington University, where he also met Karen Griffin, his life partner. After graduation, the two worked side by side at Redwood National Park on land restoration projects. He earned his master’s degree in geology at Humboldt State University, deepening his expertise in a field that matched his curiosity about the earth, his talent for “hand waving”, and his love of heavy equipment vehicles.Dave dedicated his career to the National Park Service, working in the Geologic Resources Division and eventually serving as its Chief. He believed deeply in the power of public lands and devoted his life to ensuring the nation’s geologic treasures would be preserved for future generations.Along the way, Dave and Karen raised two children, Cacia Marika and Severin William, first in California and then in Colorado. After retiring, he settled in Medford, Oregon, where he cultivated a beautiful forest farm and, true to his geologist’s eye, never stopped paying attention to the skies and the weather. Some of his happiest later moments were as “Gravy” (Grandpa Davey) to his grandson Ari Severin—whether giving tractor rides or snuggling in the chair for naps together.Dave lived with a deep sense of responsibility. He was a hard worker, a present parent, and a thoughtful steward of the land. He also had a playful side—his favorite movie was Harold and Maude, and he was known for telling stories that made him laugh so hard he could hardly finish them, like the infamous “egg out the nose” story. He had a gift for napping in his chair, a love for animals (Fred the cat being one of the most memorable), and an eye for old cars—he could name the make, model, and year of just about anything, with a special fondness for the 1955 Chevy. As a loving son to Paul and Dee, brother to Greg and Sandy, devoted husband to Karen, proud father, and delighted grandfather, Dave will be remembered for his loyalty, humor, quiet strength, and deep love for his family. Though he wasn’t always the most talkative person in the room, his stories, hand waving, laughter, and kindness made a lasting mark. And of course, he was instantly recognizable: bald on top, with a beard that was nearly always full.Dave’s life was a balance of dedication and delight—serious about what mattered, but never without warmth, humor, and the ability to pause for a good nap. His legacy continues in the people, places, and lands he loved so well.
