Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for kids aged 1 to 4, and the third leading cause for children up to 19 years old? According to Safe Kids USA, this is a critical issue that warrants immediate attention.

At Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, they've seen a concerning rise in the number of kids treated for drowning and near-drowning incidents, from 17 in 2023 to 25 in 2024.

Jennifer Taylor, Manager of Injury Prevention and Safe Kids Mid-South at Le Bonheur, urges parents to pay close attention to kids while they are swimming or near a pool.

Well-child checkups are important parts of your child’s care. While it’s important to bring your child into the office when he/she is sick, well-child visits are a good time for parents to raise questions and concerns about a child’s development, behavior, nutrition, safety and overall well-being. Our doctors use these checkups as a way to educate not only parents, but children too.

Summer is a great time to schedule a well-child check up. Schedule today by calling your clinic location.

Childhood accidents occur daily, but few are as dangerous and fast-acting as button battery ingestions. Button batteries are small, round, shiny batteries found in everything from remote controls to musical greeting cards and even children’s toys.

While they may appear harmless, if swallowed they can cause life-threatening injuries in just a matter of minutes to hours. The number of children swallowing button batteries is on the rise, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) estimates about 6,000 children visit the Emergency Room (ER) in the U.S. each year for swallowing a button battery.

Norovirus is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea among people of all ages in the United States. It’s sometimes called the stomach flu or stomach bug, but norovirus (NOR-uh-vy-ris) isn’t related to the flu, which is caused by the influenza virus.

Norovirus is very contagious, and with cases confirmed in our area, it’s important for parents to know the signs and symptoms, as well as how to prevent infection.

After the birth of your baby, you have many things to learn, and you may be overwhelmed with an abundance of information in the first few weeks after the baby's birth. It can be hard to keep track of everything you're being told! The most important thing we can recommend is asking questions to trusted resources like your baby's nurses and doctors.

Most common newborn concerns have to do with these four things, and we encourage you to ask your child's health care team questions if you are unsure about anything.

To help ease your journey, Dr. Madeline Davis, a pediatrician at Le Bonheur Pediatrics, addresses some common concerns new parents have.

Our Story

Pediatric Consultants, P.C. was started in August 1991 when Dr. Noel K. Frizzell and Dr. Landon B. Pendergrass left the general pediatric group of the University of Tennessee to form their own private practice. The practice has grown to include ten pediatricians who continue to provide general pediatric healthcare to infants, children, and adolescents in Memphis and the Mid-South area. The initial office location of Pediatric Consultants is in the physician’s office building of LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, Memphis’s premier children’s hospital. Pediatric Consultants now also has offices in East Memphis at the Baptist Women’s Hospital and in Collierville. The doctors of Pediatric Consultants are leaders in the medical community and believe in the importance of teaching and training young physicians. Both Dr. Frizzell and Dr. Pendergrass have served as Chief of Staff at LeBonheur and Dr. Ellis is the current Chief of the Pediatric Department at the Baptist Women’s Hospital. Drs. Frizzell, Pendergrass, and Mathis have received awards from the pediatric residents for their excellence in teaching. Dr. Frizzell was named as one of Memphis’s ‘Top Doctors’ in the field of Pediatrics by Memphis Magazine in July, 2009. The doctors of Pediatric Consultants believe that access and continuity are the cornerstones of quality healthcare. They have worked hard on initiatives to make significant measurable improvement in these areas.
