We are so excited to announce that we are partnering with Boys and Girls Club of Crittenden County by turning a blank space into a garden space! We won a Grassroots Grant from KidsGardening.org and ScottsMiracle-Gro to help make this vision come to life!

Introducing “The Great Futures Garden!”
With this support from Kids Gardening and several other donors, we were able to install 20 raised beds from Olle Gardens Olle Gardens Shop, a complete drip irrigation setup from Drip Depot, a donated indoor greenhouse, donated compost from Dr. Gabriel Gillette, seeds from The Herman’s Garden Program: Spreading the Joy of Gardening grant Seed Savers Exchange (thanks, Whitney!!),
and purchase vegetable/fruit/flower seeds and plants from Hoss, True Leaf Market, Willis Orchard Company, and Scenic Hill Farm Nursery.

We are excited to expand our gardens throughout the county, share our “Seed the Need” curriculum with youth, and expand program offerings at B&G Club!

Special thanks to Marion Cub Scouts Pack 172 Bear Den for helping us start our crops from seed!

Shoutout to Mallory, Roy, and Reagan for the many hours spent assembling, measuring, mulching, and planting over the past few weeks!

Thanks to The Yard Guy LLC for being a local business to purchase mulch!

Monday was a fun day in the garden at JWES! Our garden is planted and now we must wait patiently for our plants to grow. Since gardening includes so many elements, we enjoyed water games, soil crafts and kitchen treats! First we prepared grapes by rolling them in lime juice and then in strawberry or peach jello then we put them in the freezer! They were so tangy sweet and cold when we ate them at the end of the day! After that, we played fill the bucket to see which team could fill their bucket first with water! Following that, we made our grass head people and we planted sunflower seeds and zinnias for the students to take home and watch them grow! After a fun time in the water sprinkler, it was time to finish our day! Much thanks to Officer Borjon for bringing the two young men to help connect the drip irrigation system that was so generously donated to our garden!

JWES garden club has met every Friday during school break. During that time the students have amended the soil in the raised beds, planted tomato and a variety of pepper plants, Jackson-Wonder Lima beans, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini squash, okra (red, orange, and green), sweet potato slips, cucamelons, and edamame! The students have also been busy in the memorial garden planting summer flower bulbs and seeds. The beautiful flowers will encourage pollinators to visit out vegetable garden. This year we opened up the third garden space bed and planted four varieties of pumpkins! The students have had a fun time learning about corms, bulbs, slips, tubers and all the seeds!

A Bit of Hope is excited to partner with JWES Elementary School in creating a school vegetable garden in the courtyard area of the school! Thanks, in part to a grant from Blue Scope, we will soon be planting our first cool weather crops for the student to enjoy! Mrs. Williams second grade class got an early start by making seed tapes of carrots, lettuces, and turnips to be planted as soon as the beds are ready.
