"I think being a black woman in this country means having to fight to have your voice heard. Especially when it comes to pain. I'm not sure why but a lot of physicians think we don't feel pain the same way. Like if we talk about our pain or our experiences then we must be lying about it because "they all have a high pain tolerance."

I can see how this would have lasting effects on how often black women would even seek out care. If I knew I wouldn't be believed about my pain when going to a physician, then I wouldn't go either. So we sit at home and just bear it and that in turn keeps perpetuating this false narrative. I think for things to get better, healthcare providers need to take a step back and ask themselves if they believe in their patients and if they don't then ask "why am I here?" The next step to actually acknowledge that the history of gynecology, obstetrics, and pain theory in this country was built on the torture and exploitation of black women. Get angry about it and then do something to change it.

To every black woman and person with a uterus who has ever been told their pain or their feelings weren't real, I am so sorry and you did deserve better. I truly believe better is coming."

The Le Bonheur rehabilitation team would love to play with your babies (0-18 months)! We will have an occupational, physical, and speech therapist one time per month to provide information on typical developmental milestones in regards to gross and fine motor, speech development, and feeding.
