Congrats to UCLA for winning the National Women's Basketball Championship! We want to highlight star player Lauren Betts for publicly talking about dealing with depression. In this essay, she writes, "My mental health isn’t perfect. It’s an ongoing project. I was talking to my mom recently, and I told her, “I feel like I was put on this Earth to really help people. And I hope being so honest with who I am and what I’ve gone through changes lives.” Because the unspoken thing here is that my story could have ended a lot differently, and I know for so many others, their stories, tragically, do. I remind myself every single day that this is why I’m sharing my story. " Read more at https://www.theplayerstribune.com/lauren-betts-ncaa-basketball-ucla For anyone needing help, you can dial 988 and be connected immediately to resources and assistance. 💚
No matter where I go from here, I know I’ve come a long way.

Between 2017 and 2018, the Mendham Borough Council and the Mendham Township Committee each passed resolutions declaring their communities Stigma-Free. This made a total 34 of Morris County’s 39 towns, along with hospitals, schools, nonprofit agencies and law enforcement groups that have joined the countywide “Stigma Free’’ initiative.
The goal of Mendhams Stigma-Free Task Force is to foster a judgment-free environment around mental health issues and substance abuse and also to create inclusion for people with special needs, disabilities and any other “difference” that can make them feel marginalized, sidelined and not accepted.
What is Stigma-Free? Stigma is a mark of disgrace that results from the judgment of others. When someone is labeled by their illness they experience judgment and prejudice. Stigma brings experiences and feelings of shame, embarrassment, distress, hopelessness and reluctance to seek or accept help.
Studies show that one in four adults will experience a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. Yet, more than half will not seek treatment. Why? Despite its prevalence in our society, mental health still has stigma attached to it. The same applies to substance abuse.
The primary reason individuals fail to seek the help they need is due to the stigma associated with these diseases. The main reasons cited are shame and fear of judgment from friends, family and co-workers.
The Stigma-Free Task Force wants to make sure all individuals and families feel included and supported. Let’s end the stigma!
5 Ways You Can Help Create a Stigma-Free Future!
Don’t blame people who have mental illness or substance use disorders.
Always treat people with respect and encourage others around you to do the same.
Lead with kindness.
Teach your children to be open-minded and nonjudgmental about others.
