Super good explanation of the nuances of fl**ge sizing for lots of moms!
Biggest mistake you are making with fl**ge sizing... you likely have not gone small enough yet!
You have measured, tried a few sizes, and it STILL feels pinchy or tight.
OR
You were using a 24mm, trialed a 21mm since it is smaller, and that actually hurt WORSE. Back to 24mm you went, because it is atleast bearable.
The problem with this is that there are well over 40 different shapes and sizes of fl**ges on the market now. Plastic, silicone, cone shaped, narrow, less sloped, more sloped, and all in different sizes- you get the picture.
What happens when you go down in size, but not far enough down is that it can actually hurt MORE. It pulls on more sensitive tissue than it would have if we allowed WAY too much tissue in. This can also impact milk spray as well. So you get scared and you go back up to the size that was mediocre or you get labeled as “not responding to the pump”.
Sizing is so much more than a quick measurement, handing you a size, and sending you out the door. It is often a full 30-60min consult spent trying different sizes, monitoring comfort + milk sprays, and working together to figure out the best option for you.
