If you’ve ever packed your car way too full — or sold out way too fast — this is for you 👇
Inventory planning isn’t about luck.

It’s about having a simple system.
Here’s how new vendors should plan inventory for markets:

1️⃣ Set a realistic sales goal

Ask:

• How much do I want to make today?

• Am I aiming to break even or profit?

👉 This is your Target Revenue.

2️⃣ Know your average item price

Not your cheapest item — your average sale.
(This keeps your math realistic)

3️⃣ Calculate minimum units needed
💡 Inventory Formula:
Target Revenue ÷ Average Item Price = Minimum Units to Bring

4️⃣ Add a safety buffer

Bring 20–30% more than the minimum.

Why?

• Unexpected busy moments

• Customer preferences

• Sell-outs are good data

Running out isn’t failure — it’s feedback.

Overpacking without a plan, though, leads to stress, wasted prep, and burnout.

Markets should feel intentional — not chaotic.

Starting a side hustle doesn’t mean going all in overnight.
It means starting smart.

Pop-up markets give you the chance to test your idea, talk to real customers, and build confidence — without the pressure of a full business launch.

No storefront.
No massive investment.
Just you, your product, and real feedback.

This is how so many successful small businesses got their start.

If you’re guessing your prices… this is for you 👇
Market pricing isn’t about being the cheapest — it’s about being sustainable.

Here’s a simple process new vendors can actually follow:
1️⃣ Know your true cost

Add up everything that goes into one item:

• Materials

• Packaging

• Booth fees (averaged per item)

• Payment processing fees

👉 This is your cost per item.

2️⃣ Pay yourself for your time

Your labor matters.

Set an hourly rate × time spent per item.

Add that to your cost.

3️⃣ Use a healthy markup

Most market products need a 2.5x–4x markup to be sustainable.

(Yes — even at pop-ups.)

Simple formula:

👉 (Cost + Labor) × Markup = Price

4️⃣ Price for the right customer

A $10 item and a $25 item attract different buyers.

Ask: Who is this market for?

Price for the crowd — not your fear.

5️⃣ Let the market teach you

Your first few markets are data, not failure.

Track what sells, what doesn’t, and adjust with confidence.
Undervaluing your work doesn’t make your business grow —
pricing with intention does.

👉 Save this for your next market

Not all markets are created equal — and choosing the wrong one can make you question a business that actually has potential.

We see it all the time.....
Great products. Hard-working vendors.
...But the wrong crowd, no support, and zero guidance. That’s why at Made Local, we don’t just host markets — we help vendors learn before they leap.

If you’re thinking about selling at pop-ups (or already have and felt discouraged), this is your sign.

Registration is open for the Marketplace Series — a 100% FREE program brought to you by the Small Business Development Center, open to Riverside County, CA residents.
