Wild Rice Wellness

Wild Rice Wellness Wild Rice Wellness is a Functional and Integrative Medicine Practice serving patients in Colorado I’m excited to work with you every step of the way!

I’m Alison, a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Functional and Integrative Medicine Provider. I have spent the past 13 years working in academic medicine, starting my career at Georgetown University Hospital. There, I worked in the Neuro ICU and quickly came to see a trend of what landed most patients in the hospital, chronic disease. I realized that I wanted to be on the preventive si

de of healthcare so, I furthered my education at George Washington University and became a Family Nurse Practitioner. Since then, I have worked in outpatient Neurology at the University of Colorado with a focus on Migraine and chronic pain conditions. Just a couple of years ago, as I was going through my own journey to health as a new mom, I realized my moral compass was being pulled away from the traditional healthcare model. In the traditional healthcare system, there is simply a lack of time and emphasis on disease prevention and lifestyle medicine. I sought out a more integrative, holistic approach and began studying at the Institute for Functional Medicine. Finally, a science-based, lifestyle approach that could truly help get to the root-cause of disease and promote wellness. I became my own first patient and started to heal using food as medicine, targeted supplements and lifestyle approaches. I started to dream about opening my own Functional and Integrative Medicine practice because I knew I had to share this with the world and thus, Wild Rice Wellness was born. At present, I am a part-time faculty member at the University of Colorado in the Department of Neurology where I work with patients to help manage migraine and chronic pain disorders using an integrative approach. I do firmly believe there is a time and place for traditional healthcare. There are amazing benefits to the many advancements we have seen in modern medicine, but I feel that there is a lack of emphasis on “well-care” and disease prevention in the traditional healthcare system. As a mom myself, I am passionate about working with women during the pregnancy and postpartum period. I want moms to feel their best by optimizing their unique health needs so that they can meet the demands of their family and enjoy motherhood. I also have a special interest in working with athletes, particularly endurance athletes, who need their health to keep up with their training requirements and athletic endeavors. These particular groups have unique needs that often are not addressed by the conventional medical model, but I believe functional medicine has so much to offer. I also enjoying working with those who simply want to up-level their health to feel better and live longer. I use a combination of conventional, functional and lifestyle medicine in a true integrative medicine approach to help patients meet their goals and create optimal wellness. Outside of my clinical practice, I enjoy adventuring in Colorado with my husband, AP, and our two children, Claire and Jude. You can find us hitting the slopes, hiking the trails and rafting the rivers. I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it is one of our favorite places to vacation. I am an avid runner and have been for over 20 years! I have run just about every distance from 5ks to ultramarathons – it is my favorite way to relieve stress and get into nature. I enjoy cooking and using food as medicine to keep myself and my family healthy. There is nothing better than a home cooked meal surrounded by loved ones.

Moms, kick off the school year with this total game-changer: the 10-minute post-dinner tidy-up!

This quick routine has been one of my favorite ways to transform the after-school clutter from chaos to calm, setting the stage for more space in the evenings and smoother mornings that feel less hectic (even if just a little).

What this looks like:

Kitchen: Clear the table & counters, wipe surfaces, pop dishes in the dishwasher and set the coffee for the morning

Living room: pick up toys, books, laptops, extra clothes.

Entryway: pick up shoes, unload backpacks and folders, wash out water bottles, pack snacks for next day.

10 minutes is all it takes to reset and create space. For me, a tidy home reduces stress, boosts mental clarity, and gives me more time to unwind or prep for the next day.

We also get the kids involved and make it a family effort! They clear their dishes after dinner, pick up toys and shoes, empty out backpacks and pack snacks!

Start this simple habit tonight and feel the difference! Let me know what you think!!

Health truths you need to hear… from a functional medicine Nurse Practitioner, Mompreneur and health enthusiast!

☕ Coffee (even with protein powder) isn’t breakfast—fuel up properly! Aim for 30 grams of protein with some fiber, fat and carbs to jumpstart your day, keep energy and metabolism strong!

💊You can’t out-supplement a diet low in protein & fiber—prioritize whole foods and test, don’t guess when it comes to supplements!

😴 Adaptogens won’t fix a frazzled nervous system; slow down, prioritize sleep, and rest deeply.

🚫 Birth control does not “regulate your cycle” -it suppresses it—know the difference. Don’t let birth control be a bandaid for heavy periods, acne, PCOS, endometriosis, perimenopause or anything else!

🩺 Normal labs don’t always mean you’re thriving; listen to your body, it’s trying to tell you something.

🥗Fiber’s the unsung hero, protein’s the MVP, and alcohol? It’s no ally, especially if it’s your nightly ‘wind-down.’

What would you add to this list?! Is there any social media health advice you’ve been wondering about, drop it below and I’ll let you know my thoughts!

How to Keep Your Hormones Happy: Vacation Edition

We just got back to Denver from 3 glorious weeks in Michigan and while I am missing the mitten state, I am excited to get back into the swing of things and soak up some sunny Denver days before it’s back to school time! Wellness is always on my mind and with this extended trip back home, I wanted to make sure I kept some semblance of wellness while still enjoying the lazy days of summer and vacation - and all the goodness the midwest has to offer!

Here are some of the tips and tricks I kept in mind to keep my hormones happy and healthy while still enjoying vacation!

1. Morning Sunlight: Start your day with natural light to regulate your circadian rhythm and boost serotonin.
2. Daily Movement: Whether its a jog, a gentle walk, yoga, or a swim, daily movement keeps cortisol in check and energy flowing.
3. Unplug: Disconnect from screens to reduce stress and reconnect with yourself and your loved ones.
4. Prioritize Sleep & Rest: Quality rest supports adrenal health and hormone balance. I really prioritized sleep and rest this vacation and took the opportunity to get some naps in with the kids.
5. Bring Your Staple Supplements: You may not need to brig your whole supplement cabinet but stay consistent with your staple supplements to fill nutritional gaps and support stress. My staple travel supplements are: a phyto-multivitamin, magnesium, vitamin D, omega 3 and ashwagandha.
6. Lower Your Expectations: Let go of perfection—embrace the imperfectness and joys of vacation and know that you will get back to your normal routine after vacation.
7. Find Balance: Savor treats mindfully while prioritizing nourishing meals. Rest but also get movement in. Vacations are meant to get us out of our normal rhythms, and sometimes this can be a good thing but it’s all about balance!
8. Enjoy Stress-Free Time Away: Let go, have fun, and soak in the joy of the moment!

I hope you are having a wonderful summer! I’d love to hear - How do you keep your hormones and health happy on vacay? Share below!

Take me back! What a recharging girls trip last week to Hilton Head Island with my mom, sister and daughter! 🌊 ☀️From blissful beach runs, slow mornings and summer vibes all around to quality time with family, this getaway was all about rest and relaxation! We biked through Sea Pines, went on a sunset dolphin cruise (and saw a ton!!) and ate so much good food!

This was my first vacation since leaving the University which means this was the first time I was not tied to Epic on vacation in almost 10 years (that feeling alone is hard to describe!).

Hi! I’m Alison from , sharing the top 6 health concerns I’ve seen in my functional medicine practice this year.

Here’s what’s trending in 2025:
-Women seeking fertility support for challenges like PCOS, irregular cycles, recurrent miscarriage, unexplained infertility. I have FIVE pregnant mamas so far in 2025 and helping a few more women optimize for fertility right now!
-Postpartum fatigue, hormone imbalances, and nutrient depletion. I LOVE helping moms get their vitality back!
-Perimenopause symptoms sneaking in early, think mid to late 30s! There is so much we can do to support this hormonal transition from lifestyle therapies to HRT.
-Thyroid dysfunction causing a whole host of symptoms. Thyroid optimization is my JAM! As a thyroid patient myself, I know the nuance and intricacies of creating the perfect personalize plan including medications when needed!
-Iron deficiency in endurance athletes. I am SHOCKED at how many female athletes are out there training with low ferritin (iron stores). Some are even so low that I have ordered iron infusions and you know what, they feel SO MUCH better after this - energy levels improve and training and recovery get back on track!
-Gut dysfunction and SIBO. Bloating anyone?! I have seen so many SIBO cases this year! This tricky infection takes a comprehensive approach - antibiotics to antimicrobial herbs to motility agents. Constipation, diarrhea or other GI symptoms are not something you have to just live with and gut health is a pivotal piece to our overall health!!

As a Functional Medicine NP, I create personalized plans to tackle this and more! Do any of these sound familiar!?

Moms, we juggle so much—family schedules, meals, work, and endless to-do lists. And let’s be real: when life gets busy, our own health is often the first thing to go. But here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup. I know, I know, so cliche but taking care of yourself is not selfish—it’s essential for being the best mom you can be.

As a functional medicine provider and a fellow busy mom, I know how hard it can be to prioritize your health. That’s why I’m sharing 10 simple, realistic hacks to help you thrive, even on your busiest days.

✨ Some highlights:
🍳 Start your day with protein—think eggs, smoothies, or Greek yogurt for stable energy all morning.
💧 Drink water before your coffee to boost hydration, digestion, and energy.
⏱ Move in microbursts—because even 10–15 minutes of movement can do wonders.
🛌 Set a non-negotiable bedtime—your sleep is sacred.

And let’s not forget the power of saying “no.” You don’t have to do it all. Saying no to things that don’t serve you is saying YES to your health, your family, and your sanity.

💡 Swipe through the post for all 10 hacks, and remember: it’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. Even small steps can make a big difference over time.

Which of these hacks will you try first? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to cheer you on!

Let’s Ditch the Sugar!

Sugar can be sneaky—it’s everywhere! While it tastes sweet, too much sugar can disrupt your gut bacteria, fuel inflammation, and leave you feeling drained.

Why Do We Crave Sugar?
🍬 Gut Imbalance: An overgrowth of bad bacteria or yeast can trigger sugar cravings—they thrive on it! As we change what we eat, so does our microbiome and this can help with sugar cravings in the long run!
🍬 Energy Rollercoaster: Eating sugar leads to quick energy spikes, followed by crashes, making you reach for more.
🍬 Stress Response: When you’re stressed, your body craves quick energy, and sugar feels like an easy fix.
🍬 Mineral deficiencies: Zinc, Iron, Chromium and Magnesium are all crucial minerals that play a role in our taste preferences and appetite, blood sugar regulation and more. Getting your levels tested to see if you might need some of these can be a key to gut health and overall wellness! Always test, don’t guess! Too much of these minerals can also cause problems!

Why Cutting Back Matters:
🌟 It helps balance your microbiome.
🌟 It reduces energy crashes and cravings.
🌟 It sets the stage for long-term health for you and your kids.

💡 Family-Friendly Tip: Involve your little ones in making a healthy treat! Try smoothie bowls, frozen fruit bites, or homemade energy balls for a naturally sweet boost.

🌈 Today’s challenge: Swap out sugary snacks for whole, nutrient-dense options like fruit, nuts, or yogurt. What’s your favorite healthy swap?

Diversity in our diet is one key to a healthy gut microbiome and overall health. Different foods offer different phytonutrients that are key to reducing inflammation, oxidation and the negative effects of aging. By incorporating a wide array of colors in the diet, not just this week but always, can ensure you are getting a full spectrum of antioxidants and phytonutrients to promote health and longevity.

Eating what is in season can be a great way to mix up what produce you are consuming. Another great way is to pick one new fruit or vegetable each week to incorporate into the diet and promote diversity. And as far as phytonutrients go, don’t forget about spices and teas which have powerful antioxidants and beneficial properties!

Every once in a while I find it fun to track how may different plants I’m eating in a weeks time and I generally try to aim for 30 different types of plants to support my gut health. 30 may seem like a lot but its easier than you think when you add in a couple of smoothies and salads each week! The kids get a kick out of this too!!

I hope these slides give you some ideas on some different produce to try this week and beyond!!
