Last week my role with the World Evangelical Alliance (Permanent Representative to the World Health Organization) was reactivated so that I can assist with the WEA commitment to the World Health WASH initiative. This initiativce is a joint effort by WHO and UNICEF to improve access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation in health facilities in poor countries.
Poor hygiene, lack of access to clean water, and poor sanitation are a major cause of hospital acquired infections in Africa. It not only increases mortality, it also compromises a hospitals ability to respond to disease outbreaks.
WEA has committed to engaging National Alliances and faith-based NGO partners in implementing the WHO WASH toolkit. Over the next several months we will be creating a pilot initiative focusing on poor countries not currently implementing WASH or not making progress.
We will also be searching for foundation support and donors to help with this initiative. We welcome suggestions for potential supporters.
Welcome to the WHO and UNICEF WASH in health care facilities knowledge portal, the global site for information and resources related to the topic.
