The absolute BEST support crew 🥹

It’s hard to explain how much you need the people in your corner.

THANK YOU for the support during training, the texts, and these people and young children who came out on course in multiple locations to make sure I was taken care of. I know it’s just a second that you see me, but it gives me that boost I need for the whole race.

I knew most of these people who would be here (a few not pictured), but I didn’t know my sweet cousin & his wife would be there 😭 and also my friend who drove HOURS from a different state to surprise me and cheer me on. 😭😭It meant the world and made such a difference to the outcome of this race. THANK YOU 💛

Boise Ironman 70.3 PART 2

RUN (1:50:14) 🏃‍♀️
Saw family out the chute which gave me an early boost. Started strong sub 8 min/mi pace but knew I’d likely slow down. It was beautiful lots of green and the river, I used to come to Idaho in the summers so it brought back the best memories. Ran with gratitude and received a lot of compliments bc most everyone was going pretty slow, that was a perk of doing a triathlon as a runner. I did slow down the last half because I allowed myself to walk at each aid station mile knowing I had some time to kill to still get under 6 hours, so I’d get some water and put ice in my shirt every mile to keep me cool that was a game changer. Nutrition was a struggle, just felt so full and high heart rate made it hard to take in fuel. Just thought, it’s just x minutes til the finish line.

The last stretch I felt very emotional and grateful. The family and friend that came to cheer me on, the months of sacrifice and support of my husband and children, for letting me drag them along for my goals. “She wont let go of her dreams, she’ll bring the kids with her”.

I tried to smile as much as possible during this race, it wasn’t forced it was actual true joy. I felt so strong during this race and know it was God, a healthy body, a family that supports me, and training partners who inspire me.

Total finish time: 5:58:03

PART 1

A goal: enjoy the process, take it all in, perform with gratitude ❤️‍🔥

SWIM (48:18)🐡
In training I had swam in a lake 5-6 times before and even did here in Boise to practice the water. So I felt confident but jitters at the start line. Got in and possibly swam too quickly.. or maybe just panicked bc the water was very choppy and I’d never swam with that many ppl. I held to a paddleboard on the side for about 10-15 seconds to just breathe but it wasn’t getting any better… so I just went for it, thought happy thoughts, like pretending my girl Sophie was swimming with me, and finally got in a groove and breathed normally after 3-400 yards. The rest felt pretty smooth sailing for my body and mind. 48:18 is a tad slower than I thought I’d be but from what others were saying the swim might have been a bit long anyway, so maybe my actual pace wasn’t too far after all. I was happy, got to transition smiling & grateful to be 1/3 done.

T1 (6:28) 🏊‍♀️➡️🚴‍♀️
Dropped my uncrustable on the ground🫠 took a bite and gravel in my mouth so I tossed it and went on my way after getting prepped for the bike.

BIKE (3:07:45)🚴‍♀️
Honestly getting on the bike I was SO RELIEVED because the last month was so stressful with figuring out travel with the bike and $$ to get it here safely without it getting scratched or broken. I felt a big weight off my shoulders going down the first hill. I felt like a queen passing a lot, that’s the perk of swimming slower I guess! But also had trained for hills so the uphills were actually very manageable. Wind felt like it was coming from every direction but everyone else was dealing with it too so I had to remind myself that. The views were pretty much dirt and sage brush, but I liked the course being a little hilly and the ONE corn field smelled like my grandmas hometown 🥰. Nutrition was on point. Time was better than I expected which helped make up for the few minutes of swim time!

T2 (4:50)🚴‍♀️➡️🏃‍♀️
Racked bike/put shoes on. I cracked open a Red Bull to get a boost, took a bathroom stop, & on my way.

This race was supposed to be a “training race”. So the pressure was low. Testing my fitness. See where I’m at. Relearn what this distance feels like in a race, since my big race involves a swim bike and run 13.1.

My entire goal was to:
1. pay attention to effort, heart rate, and how long my body can hold it
2. finish strong with a negative split strategy, “closing in” without bonking
3. Stay calm, zero expectations

I knew I was capable of a PR, but again didn’t want that to be the focus, I wanted the focus to be on “awareness”, letting my body do the work instead of trying to push my body to its limits the entire time (never a good strategy in a distance race yet sometimes we fall into that.. anyone else?)

🥜🍇Morning of I ate two uncrustables on the ride to the start line

It was cold up top, so my feet got a little numb, did a 10ish min warmup with drills and run and that helped, and took in a ⚡️50mg caffeine / 40g carb chews just a bit prior and just asked God to help me to learn my body’s effort

I wanted to stay on the lighter side with my nutrition, because of nightmares of past races where I’d get sick and tummy issues, nausea vomiting etc. and with a half marathon that’s possible. Sipped a 20 oz water throughout the race

Gun went off, started the race. Everyone around me was going pretty fast, and looking down I noticed I needed to slow down so I didn’t get out too hot

It took about the first mile or two to get into a groove. HR was averaging low 170s which I knew my body is capable of holding for this distance.

The views were amazing, I felt grounded, and I felt calm. The course continued to light a fire in me (nature tends to do that for me).

When I saw my 4th mile clock in at 6:55, I said “oh shoot” out loud, feeling slightly scared that I was going out hot, but also trusting my body was in better shape than I thought, I held back juuuust a tad but felt settled into a pace

This is a tough one to write.

You’ll get some vulnerability from me in this post.

People might look at this and think, wow 3:26:11, that’s a very respectable time. Or, you ran a marathon, that in itself is impressive.

But honestly, I’m frustrated.

I set lofty goals, I work for them, and then I want to achieve them come the big day.

Of course grateful, that’s my second fastest marathon. But still bummed. In my workouts it looked like I’d be capable of a 3:15.

Here’s the story.

Two months ago my friend kicked butt in her marathon. Qualified for Boston, and I bumped my Mesa half marathon up to the full. I want SO BAD to be at Boston with her. Something we’ve both strived for since we started running together in 2018(?). 🥹

My training was just 7 weeks, but a strong 7 weeks. My paces in workouts were the fastest I’ve EVER been, and in my head I thought “if I can push juuuust a little, I could swing for an nyc marathon qualifier at 3:13. So that was the A goal. And B goal was to PR (3:21) and C goal was to qualify for Boston with a buffer (3:23 at least, but 3:25 would be official). D goal was just get a course PR. I thought my B goal would be NO PROBLEM, and even when I saw Nick at mile 10, I told him “we’re going to Boston” because I was so strong.

I started late waiting in a toilet line. Regretted that since I was weaving through people running over the total distance with all the weaving, but it did help me feel good passing a lot. Was a boost. Wasn’t a huge deal. Just a minute it might cost me.

I felt on top of the world for the first half. My legs felt strong, my breathing was under control, I was sticking to my plan. Saw family along the way and felt great.

No porta potty issues or stops, stayed on top of my nutrition/hydration.

I took in a caffeinated gel around 14(? It’s all a blur), and spit out some vomit (sorry tmi).

All of a sudden I started getting a little side stitch. I tried to just run through it, praying god would just take it away (these RARELY happen to me, and happened 2 weeks ago too and so I’ve been really working on my breathing, even wore a nose strip at the race).

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT.📣

Screenshotted my latest Marathon Fueling email.

And disclaimer. I don’t make huge life decisions based on a piece of paper. I believe in doing all the research and thoughts given toward a decision, asking God for support along the way. And that was the final push I needed.

I’ll be here every now and then, just to show my training & fueling, but not to sell you anything or spend too much time here. 🏃‍♀️ Hoping I can come back in a few years or longer depending on how life leads.

Thank you for being here, friends!!! 😭

Grand Canyon nutrition plan right here⬇️
This worked so well for me that I was running up the incline on the last mile of our 18-mile rim to river to rim.
I mean of course my years of endurance training helped as well.

I wish I would have taken a photo at the hotel after, because I legit looked 6 months pregnant after all the fueling. And i would totally do it the same again.

My goal was around 300 calories per hour give or take. First 3/4 was on the heavier side than the last 1/4. Drank 200(?) ounces of water/electrolytes. Froze my full 2L water pack bladder and the cold water was the best thing I did! Stayed cold for about 5 hours.

Set up my watch to beep at me every 30 minutes so I’d remember to take it in, checked in with myself if I hadn’t taken it.

Around 3,000 calories total for during (this doesn’t include my pre and post hike)

- pre-hike was fairlife, oats overnight, & applesauce
- not pictured skratch high carb (I’m obsessed- 50g of carbs in a single water bottle, and tastes like lemon water!)
- 1 maple syrup packet
- 1 skratch chews pack
- 1/3 of a pack of nerds clusters
- 1/2 a pack of turkey sticks
- 2 uncrustables
- 1 go gel
- 1/4 of a pack of cheese whisps
- quantum energy bar (100mg caffeine, took this with 2 hours left and it was exactly what I needed!!)
- 1 mini clif bar
- 2 packs of clif blocks (one had double electrolytes for early on the hike, one had 50mg caffeine for the last hour of the hike)
- 1/3 of a glass of lemonade at the bottom
- Osmo electrolyte packet and 2 salt tabs
- 1 cup of pickles + the juice (thank you for sharing because this was one of the best things I ate hands down!)

Sorry if I forgot something but I think that covers it. All the trailing took away my brain power! 😝

If you have any questions I’d love to chat! I’m now addicted.

June/July training dump☀️

Aaaaaand a little announcement for the majority of you who don’t see my Strava!

This summer I stepped outside my shell and included more:
🚣🏼‍♀️paddle boarding
🔥5k racing
💦lap swimming
🚴‍♀️cycling

It’s a different phase of life and I’m still trying to figure out what direction I want to go with my goals. Focusing on small ones for now with no marathon in close sight.

I officially signed up for a race I’ve never done before. If you follow me on Strava you probably already know. Here’s a hint that will give it away!! 🏊‍♀️ 🚴‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️

I’m excited and nervous! What are you training for during this heat? 🔥

“Just pass SpongeBob guy”

💛25-finish-was able to run to the finish the last mile and some. I was still in pain, but knowing my family was near the end of 25 kept me running. I didn’t even know what my watch said. I just let the crowd get me through. I saw Nick, the kids, mom in law, and grandparents. I kissed Nick and gave Sophie some loves, and got a quick boost to fuel my finish. Knowing they were out here FOR ME, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENED, got me through and running.

The last stretch was again electric and it’s hard to describe the feeling. I ignored the pain and just fought to cross the line. I had flashbacks to all the moments that God helped me get here, and the work it took. When I crossed the line, I saw everyone with hands in the air. I did the same, smiling, but instead of hands or peace signs, I pointed in the air, because I owe it all to God. 💛💙

The fire he put in me, the strength to not give up, the ability to have an amazing training block, and the miracle of finishing without my legs seizing up on me. 🫶🏼

Oh, yes, I passed SpongeBob. Didn’t sprint, but picked up my legs enough to do it. 😛

Boston recap part 4: falling apart.

That photo I really did not want to post, but it captures the struggle and pain I was feeling!

💙22-24-
Cramping in both quads right on the upper inside of my knees. It was so painful I got to the point I didn’t feel like I could run anymore. I hobbled to a medical tent where an angel around mile 23? rubbed with biofreeze or something. I felt better at that point and after that 12:00+ mile with the stop, I decided if it hurt I could walk, but then I’d have to start running again. After this I was able to keep going, slowly but surely, high 9’s.

I had legit thoughts 💭 “I will make it to the finish, even if I have to crawl”.

I stopped looking at my watch. All I thought about was the people I’m here for, the message I wanted to send: I WILL NOT GIVE UP. PAIN WON’T STOP ME.

Finally, end was in sight.
