Many clients who are challenged by health issues will not be able to receive a lengthy thermotherapy session. Adjusting the length of the time you expose them to alternating temperatures will help to *tonify and strengthen* their body without compromising their state of health.

[Are any of your clients Pregnant?]: Please read this post in it's entirety for the wise teachings of Mary Nelson (Founder of LaStone Therapy) on treating those who are expecting.

Pregnant women can receive a LaStone session if the following is in place:

1. The therapists that treats a pregnant woman should be a Certified Prenatal Therapist.

2. The LaStone therapist has a strong understanding of alternating temperatures to the body and what to look for with responses from the body

a. Never use just hot stones on a pregnant woman (or anyone for that matter)

b. Always use both heated and chilled stones on everyone

c. Always alternate between the two temperatures to support the changes within her muscles to help them relax and offer her comfort

d. The chilled stones are what will help reduce any inflammation the pregnant woman is experiencing in her body, especially in her legs and feet

ii. by offering light Lymphatic strokes with chilled stones from ankles to hip area you can reduce the fluid buildup and reduce the pain she is experiencing

ii. by offering heated stones to the legs you can reduce leg cramps

3. The pregnant woman is in her second trimester or more

4. The pregnant woman should not be diabetic

5. The LaStone treatment is designed to fit the pregnant woman’s specific needs

a. it is not a full LaStone Original Body stroke sheet

b. it is specialized for the areas of her body that need support with temperature

6. You can tuck warm and cool stones along her body where she needs extra support with temperature

7. You can offer alternating hot and cold stones to isolated areas on the pregnant woman, focusing on the areas she needs the most change and comfort

8. Do not do a spinal layout

9. Do not do Chakra layouts

10. Do not place stones directly on the fetus area

11. NEVER offer taping of stones (piezoelectric effect) the baby does not handle this well

12. Always check in with the pregnant woman for 72-hours after the LaStone session

a. Keep records of her results so you know how to design a LaStone session for her each week

13. Above all remember “Less is More” when offering temperature to a pregnant woman, the baby cannot communicate to you how it is doing

04/03/2013

The Spinal Layout must have a purpose; you must fully understand why you are placing either a hot or cold stone along the spine or how these two temperatures complement one another. Each stone you choose should support the body in responding to temperature via the nervous system.

04/01/2013

In a stone massage session, a heated or chilled stone is the medium for delivering therapeutic temperatures to the body, while the epidermis and the muscles are the receptors.

03/27/2013

Swedish massage alone begins the process of the removal of toxins in the body; when coupled with heated stones, the reactions are tenfold. Adding temperature demands that the body not only respond to the modality, but also to the increased blood flow encouraged by the temperatures.

[Tip]: If your client has varicose veins, tuck chilled stones under the leg where there is varicosity. This will help reduce pain and swelling in that area and offers the client temporary relief. Remember, you cannot massage varicose veins.

[Question]: So, we talked about wrist, hand and thumb care this week... What other challenges have you been facing in stone massage? We are here to support you in the best way that we can!

03/21/2013

If you are experiencing challenges with your wrists, thumb and digits you may want to soak your arms in ice water at least once a day for 3 minutes. You may also want to use a thumb guard brace while sleeping.

*Use the appropriate shape of stone for your hands so you hold it in such a way to maintain an anatomically correct position with your hands, wrists and digits.

*Be sure that you are standing in such a way that your wrists and hands are anatomically correct when using stones. Move around the body if need be to position your hands and wrists correctly.

Thank you to Mary Nelson of LaStone Therapy for all of your wonderful tips this week!

03/20/2013

Remember that whatever temperature(s) the stones are they are affecting your hands and wrists just like the temperature is accelerating the client’s circulatory systems.

o Use heated stones to relax an area and stop muscle cramps and to keep the client cozy warm.

o Use chilled stones to reduce inflammation, to change congestion, to encourage blood flow to move away from an area and used long enough to bring oxygenated blood to an area, to move lymphatic fluids, to change emotional blockage, to create a chemical change to promote healing.

o Always end in a cold application, this will reduce inflammation for your thumbs & wrists, just like it promotes a healing response with your client’s body.

We hope you are enjoying these tips from Mary Nelson of LaStone Therapy!

[Tips from Mary Nelson of LaStone Therapy]: Body mechanics are *vital* to the health of your hands, wrists and thumbs!

o Make sure you are holding the stones in such a way that your fingers, thumb and Thenar muscles are resting naturally over the stone.

o Your thumb should never be gripping a stone, if it is you are not allowing your thumb and Thenar muscles to rest along the length of the stone naturally.
