Toddlers crave independence, even when they don’t yet have the skills to do the desired tasks on their own.

When we ask open-ended questions like, “Are you ready for bed?” or “Do you want to leave the park?” we’re accidentally giving them control over something that isn’t actually optional.

One simple way to solve this problem? Offer choices!

When you offer your child choices, you can reduce power struggles and build regulation skills at the same time. Want more practical tips and tools you can use at home? Reach out to learn how our early intervention services can support your child!

How do I know if my toddler’s fine motor skills are developing? You’ll see your child exploring with their hands, trying to open or close things, and even begin participating in self-care activities like getting dressed!

Fine motor strength and bilateral coordination are necessary for everyday skills like feeding, dressing, drawing, stacking, and playing.

When toddlers use both hands together effectively, they gain independence and confidence in activities that build the foundation for school and daily life.

An OT can help guide your toddler with fun, engaging activities that strengthen hand skills and coordination, setting them up for success in everyday routines.

Looking for simple ways to support your child’s language at home? Try these fun strategies that turn everyday moments into learning opportunities!

1️⃣ Blow bubbles… then wait!
Pause before blowing more bubbles to give your child a chance to gesture, point, or say “more!”

2️⃣ Offer choices
Instead of asking yes/no questions, try “Do you want the apple or the banana?” This encourages your child to use words to make a request.

3️⃣ Pause during familiar songs
Sing a favorite tune and leave off the last word in a line — your child might just surprise you by filling it in!
