ArcGNO is proud to share with you the newly dedicated Audrey Flynn Garden at our Metairie location.

Audrey, whose daughter, Barbara, is an ArcGNO participant, was a true community champion whose legacy will continue to bloom in our Memorial Garden.

She dedicated more than three decades to volunteering at City Hall, serving her neighbors with purpose and grace. A nurse by profession at Daughters of Charity, she spent most of her life giving back โ€” advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the State Capitol and at home in New Orleans.

Even in her final wishes, she continued her mission, asking that donations be made to The Arc of Greater New Orleans. ๐Ÿ’œ

Her spirit, kindness, and advocacy remind us that one personโ€™s commitment can plant seeds that grow for generations.

Our Family Support Coordination program is growing, with 30 new children ages 0-2 enrolling in October alone to receive crucial early intervention and support services.

ArcGNO Family Supports Coordination offers case management so your child can access needed therapies and services. We come to your home to make the assessment more comfortable for you and can arrange for translators.

The best part is, we still have openings!

ArcGNO is excited to announce we've signed an MOU with New Orleans Public Schools to be the Care Coordinator for more than 4,000 students, representing a major systems-level impact area.

What does this mean? Our team will now provide additional IEP support for 4,000+ eligible K-12 students and their parents, helping them learn and navigate the IEP process, manage behavior, and understand diagnoses with face-to-face meetings and ongoing support follow-ups.

What's so important that we're showing you a picture of a vending machine?

Well, we're excited to share ArcGNO has signed a memorandum of understanding with Gulf Coast Bank to create a micro-enterprise opportunity for our participants to maintain and manage the vending machines at the bank's main branch!

We just love it when our local business community can help us provide competitive, integrated employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Javonie Evans, program manager for Louisiana Rehabilitation Services at ArcGNO, recently led a class for pre-employment transition.

In this particular session, students learned how to ask to get their needs met on their IEP and later apply for integrated employment!

AcrGNO is currently serving three classes of 12 students each at New Harmony High School to provide pre-employment training services to give students with disabilities the tools, experiences, and confidence they need to succeed after graduation.

Our Story

In 1953 a group of concerned parents joined forces to provide better lives for their children who, because of developmental delays and intellectual disabilities, were not able to participate in everyday society. At the time, little was known about intellectual disabilities, referred to then as โ€œmental retardation.โ€ It was very common for doctors to counsel parents to place their children in institutions for most of their lives. Emboldened by their collective desire to raise their children in the home and their refusal to accept that institutionalization was the only option, groups around the country organized and implemented at the local level action plans aimed at giving their children fuller lives in the community.

Initially groups used the acronym A.R.C. and called themselves Associations for Re****ed Children. In 1992, however, growing sensibility to the hurtful connotation of the โ€œrโ€ word moved them to abandon the acronym and instead to use the word Arc. An arc is a curved pathway. Planets and electricity, for instance, move in arcs. It is the mission of the Arc to accompany our clients throughout their life journeys so that, by following their own pathways, they can achieve their goals and dreams.

Our independent local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is known as Arc of Greater New Orleans. We currently serve some 600 children and adults in Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and St. Tammany parishes.
