(10/21/24 News Release)
The 2024 “Cancer Warriors Walk for Hope” was held in October with organizers calling it as a success in the fight against cancer in the region.
Healthcare providers and businesses serving area cancer families and those impacted hosted the one-day event on October 5 at the Dorothy Miller Park in Metropolis, Illinois to provide a day full of fun and resources for cancer patients, caregivers, and family members of all ages, while raising awareness and funds to support cancer programs in the lower seven counties in Illinois. This is the 2nd year for the event.
More than 45 local businesses and agencies, and several area residents participated in the event either through monetary donations, setting-up a booth at the event, and/or participating in the Walk-a-Thon raising over $5,200 for cancer programs in the region. The event was a partnership presented by Massac Memorial Hospital, Union County Hospital, Hardin County General Hospital, Rural Health, Inc., CHESI (Community Health & Emergency Services), Southern 7 Health Department, and the Hope Light Foundation.
“The primary goal of the “Cancer Warriors Walk for Hope” is to raise awareness about cancer prevention and treatment provided in the lower southern seven counties in Illinois; giving visitors the chance to meet providers outside a clinical setting,” said Shawnna Rhine with Southern 7 Health Department. “While it’s true that patients often must travel outside our region for advanced cancer care, healthcare providers here at home are able to help ease that burden by conducting needed screenings like CT Scans and MRIs, bloodwork, and other treatment in coordination with your oncologist.”
Plans are already underway for next year’s Walk to be held on October 4. Anyone wishing to donate throughout the year, or if they want more information, can contact Rhine at 618-634-2297, ext. 971161 or visit the Cancer Warriors Walk for Hope page.
