One of my patients just asked me if acupuncture is only good for lowering the levels of stress. Yes, acupuncture is great for bringing relaxation and for much more than that. More than 300 types of illnesses can be treated or prevented by acupuncture.

☯️ What are the Mechanisms of Action of Acupuncture?

While the concept of Qi and meridians forms the cornerstone of TCM, Western science sheds light on the physiological mechanisms underlying acupuncture's effectiveness. The insertion of needles at specific points triggers various biochemical and neurological responses in the body:

Neurotransmitter and Hormone Release:

Opioid Peptides: Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins and enkephalins, natural pain-relieving neurotransmitters, from the pituitary gland and spinal cord. This "gate control" theory suggests that endorphins inhibit pain signals reaching the brain.

Serotonin and Dopamine: Studies show acupuncture can increase levels of these mood-regulating neurotransmitters, potentially contributing to its benefits in anxiety and depression.

Cortisol: Acupuncture may modulate cortisol, a stress hormone, leading to improved stress management and overall well-being.

Nerve Stimulation and Blood Flow:

Acupuncture may also help to improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety and depression.

The authors suggest that acupuncture may be effective by:
- Reducing muscle tension
- Improving blood flow to the head and neck
- Regulating the autonomic nervous system
- Reducing inflammation

The authors also note that acupuncture is safe and well-tolerated for most people.

☯️ Acupuncture has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for over 100 conditions, including chronic pain, migraines, and diabetes. Studies suggest that acupuncture can regulate pancreas function, insulin levels, and cortisol, a hormone that signals stress in the body. Acupuncture techniques can aid in weight loss, metabolism, organ function, and nerve pain, and may help balance the body's ability to regulate sugar levels. In rat studies, acupuncture increased insulin secretion and reduced insulin resistance. For chronic conditions like diabetes, 6 to 14 sessions of acupuncture may be recommended, followed by periodic "tune-up" sessions. Auricular acupuncture may be used alone or in combination with body acupuncture. Acupuncture has also been shown to benefit neuropathic pain through the release of endogenous opioids, neurotransmitters, and increased blood flow. One study found that 77% of patients experienced significant improvement in their symptoms using TCM acupuncture points. While TCM does not offer a cure for some types of diabetes, it aims to optimize the body's ability to function normally and manage symptoms.
