Black psychologists, therapists, and healers have been shaping mental health for decades! But many of their names are missing from history books. Let’s change that.

So many impactful Black mental health professionals. Please tag them and show them some love!

Black healing has always existed. But colonialism, slavery, and systemic racism attempted to erase the rich mental health practices that African societies used for centuries: rituals, herbal medicine, spirit healers, and communal therapy.

The Impact of Slavery on Black Mental Health:
🔹 African healing traditions were criminalized & erased
🔹 Enslaved Africans were denied medical and mental health care
🔹 Black people were labeled as “mentally unfit” for resisting oppression

Yet, our ancestors found ways to heal.
🔹 Spirituals & music became therapy
🔹 Storytelling preserved identity & wisdom
🔹 Faith & community kept people strong

Black healing is resistance. This Black History Month, we honor the resilience of our ancestors and the mental health practices that have always been with us.

QOTD: What healing traditions have been passed down in your family? Let’s talk! ⬇️

This year annual footwashing event is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of Black men. Nationally, black people make up 13% of the US population but represent 40% of unsheltered population. Men are more likely to be unsheltered than women and the median age of people living on the street is 55 years old. This means the majority of people living on the streets across the country are Middle Aged Black men.

When HB1365 was championed by the chair of the homeless trust and signed into legislation, it was well known that Black Men would bear the brunt of the law’s consequences..which is criminalization of homelessness.

To reaffirm our position, we believe housing is a human right. We believe police should not be made gatekeepers of social services, that passing a law that criminalizes homelessness is racist given the demographics of those living on the street and it’s inhumane to punish people for being poor.

This year we will restore faith in humanity through footwashing. Feel free to share the fliers with the people who spend the majority of their day on their feet (in 3 languages).

We look forward to seeing you.

We are wrapping up the year and we are excited to share our reflections, accomplishments and plans for 2023 with you! Nationally, local government spends over 200 billion dollars on police. Meanwhile, our communities are starved of the resources essential to our safety - housing, jobs, mental health care, transportation, after school programming, etc. Our communities are caught in a trap - poverty, criminalization and violence. We are bringing communities together to break this trap!

We are so excited to share our work with you and even more excited about where we are headed in 2023. Thank you for your trust and support!

In September we held an event in honor of two boys that passed away over the summer. We worked with family to have components to honor their families while providing information around CPR and Stop the Bleed training. Thankful to the collaboration with Bullets for life for bringing a session around destroying bullets to make bracelets. Thank you to Gang alternative and Circle of Brotherhood for the support and collaboration.
