As we mentioned a couple of weeks back, the letters are now arriving. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has begun notifying individuals whose disabled parking permits were improperly issued or fraudulently obtained. These letters confirm that permits not authorized by a licensed physician or valid medical documentation have been canceled, are no longer valid, and must be surrendered immediately. Continued use of a canceled permit can result in serious criminal penalties, including jail time and fines, and may prohibit the individual from obtaining a new permit for up to four years.

A zero-tolerance policy is in effect, along with a countywide audit of every disabled parking permit and temporary permit issued in the last 24 months. Fraud and abuse have harmed seniors, veterans, and residents with real mobility challenges for far too long, and this will no longer be tolerated. Under Florida law, fraudulent disabled parking permits are criminal acts, not technical violations. Every false, expired, stolen, or unlawfully used permit identified in this audit will be revoked without exception, and cases will be referred for prosecution when appropriate. Disabled parking permits are not conveniences, they are lifelines. Miami-Dade residents deserve fairness, transparency, and a system they can trust, and the law will be enforced firmly to protect those who truly need these permits. This is just the beginning. I will not tolerate this. Thank you to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for the collaboration and, above all, for continuing to put residents first.

Safety Starts with You: Our National Pedestrian Safety Month campaign is urging both pedestrians and drivers to stay alert on the roadways.

Pedestrians have the highest fatality rate among all road users in Florida. More than 12,000 pedestrian-related crashes occurred in Florida last year.

Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility, which is why it is so important for both motorists and pedestrians alike to remain vigilant on the roadway and behind the wheel.
