Are your treatment goals SMART or just smart-sounding? There's a difference, and it shows in your mastery data.
A well-written behavioral goal has five components:
→ Specific behavior (observable and measurable)
→ Condition (what's the antecedent?)
→ Criterion (how many times? what accuracy? across how many trials?)
→ Timeframe (by when?)
→ Generalization plan built in from day one
❌ Weak goal: "Client will improve communication"
✅ Strong goal: "Given a preferred item placed out of reach, client will vocally request the item using a complete phrase in 4/5 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions"
📌 Mid-year goal audit checklist:
☐ Is the behavior operationally defined?
☐ Is the baseline documented?
☐ Is the criterion meaningful (not arbitrary)?
☐ Is there a generalization or maintenance plan?
☐ Has the family had input?
Strong goals → strong outcomes. 🎯
