🧠 What Fight or Flight Does to Your Nervous System

The fight or flight response is part of your sympathetic nervous system — it's your body’s emergency alarm system. It’s meant to protect you from danger, but when you're stuck in it all the time (due to trauma, stress, etc.), it overworks your mind and body.

💡 1. It Activates Survival Mode

Your brain thinks you’re in danger (even if it's emotional, not physical).

The amygdala (fear center in your brain) goes on high alert.

It sends a signal to your hypothalamus to activate the autonomic nervous system.

Then your adrenal glands flood your body with stress hormones like:

Adrenaline – makes you ready to fight or run

Cortisol – keeps you alert, but too much causes burnout

⚡ 2. It Shuts Down "Non-Essential" Functions

To help you survive, your body turns off or slows down things it thinks you don’t need:

Digestion (which is why your stomach hurts or you lose appetite)

Immune system (you get sick easier)

Reproductive system (can mess with periods or libido)

Clear thinking (hard to concentrate or make decisions)

💔 3. It Makes You Feel Unsafe in Safe Places

When this system is always on (especially if you’ve had trauma), your body:

Overreacts to small stress

Can't tell the difference between a real threat and a memory

Keeps you in a loop of anxiety, panic, or shutting down

Feels like you're constantly on edge, waiting for the worst

😫 4. It Can Cause Dysregulation (Long-Term Effects)

If you stay in fight or flight too long:

Nervous system can’t relax into parasympathetic (rest + heal) mode

You might get stuck in:

Fight (anger, control, rage)

Flight (avoidance, anxiety, overworking)

Freeze (numbness, shutdown, dissociation)

Fawn (people-pleasing to stay safe)

💗 What You Really Need:

To move out of this state, your nervous system needs to feel:

Safe

Seen

Soothed

Supported

These are known as the 4 S's of nervous system healing.

💥 COMMON TRIGGERS OF FIGHT OR FLIGHT MODE (SYMPATHETIC RESPONSE):

🧠 Mental/Emotional Triggers:

Past trauma (especially unhealed childhood trauma)

Fear of abandonment or rejection

Feeling judged, shamed, or criticized

High-pressure situations (deadlines, performance anxiety)

Conflict or arguments

Lack of control or unpredictability

Emotional neglect or invalidation

Gaslighting or manipulation

🔊 Sensory Triggers:

Loud noises (sirens, yelling, fireworks)

Sudden movements or being startled

Bright lights or flashing images

Crowded or overstimulating environments

👃 Body/Physical Triggers:

Low blood sugar (feeling hangry)

Exhaustion or lack of sleep

Caffeine, sugar, or alcohol overload

Chronic pain or inflammation

Hormonal shifts (like PMS or adrenal fatigue)

Being too hot or too cold

😥 Relational Triggers:

Lack of safety in relationships

Disrespect, betrayal, or dishonesty

Inconsistent communication

Feeling ignored or dismissed

Hypervigilance from past emotional wounds

🌍 Environmental Triggers:

Unsafe living situations

Financial stress or job insecurity

Lack of support system

Sudden changes in environment or routine

Racing heart

Shallow breathing or holding breath

Sweaty palms

Clenched jaw or fists

Irritability, panic, or anxiety
