Santiagos Angels Foundation Santiago Estevez, age 5, was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a form of childhood cancer this past February.

Having a child diagnosed with cancer is one of the most painful and difficult situations any parent or family can face. One in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they turn 20. Even more unfortunate is that only 4% of cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer each year. This page is dedicated to Santiago Estevez, who was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma at the age of 4. Medulloblastoma is a malignant pediatric brain tumor. It is estimated that 18% of childhood brain tumors are due to medulloblastoma. Approximately 70% of all cases occur in children under the age of 10. Santiago is now 5 years old and since the diagnosis has undergone surgery, radiation, and is now undergoing chemotherapy treatment. While Miami, FL is his birthplace and hometown, Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital is now this families new temporary reality. The family firmly believes in the power of prayer in numbers. 59 years later and not much has changed for our children diagnosed with DIPG brain cancer. Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) represents approximately 80% of the malignant brainstem tumors occurring in children. Five year survival rates can range from almost 0% for cancers such as DIPG.
Despite numerous clinical trials, the outcome of children with DIPG continues to remain dismal, with a median survival of only 11 months, while only 10% of DIPG patients have ≥ 2-year overall survival (OS) rate.
