OHIO — Erin Slay likes to cook.

"Makes my family happy. Makes me happy. It’s a good way to de-stress," said Slay.

But nutritious foods aren’t all this mother keeps in her kitchen. Since August, Ozempic has remained fully stocked in her fridge.

What You Need To Know
The drug Ozempic has gotten quite a bit of attention lately as the latest weight loss trend

But it's meant for patients with type 2 diabetes — not as a quick fix to shed a few pounds

There’s currently a shortage of the medication, which is causing issues for some who need it
“The Ozempic has really helped me," she said.

She started taking Ozempic after finding out she has type 2 diabetes last summer. As a nurse, the diagnosis was hard to cope with at first.

“Shocked probably wasn’t even the right word. Devastated was probably a word because I never wanted to hear those words," said Slay.

Now, Slay said she feels like one of the lucky ones. She said she knows the semaglutide injection medication is experiencing a shortage currently, and so far, she hasn’t had an issue filling her prescription.

“I get mine from University Hospitals pharmacy," she said.

It’s shipped to her home each month and that proactive approach works for her.

“And I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve been able to get the medication. I haven’t had any problems with it," said Slay.

According to the manufacturer that creates Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, intermittent supply disruptions are expected to continue through mid-March. The company cites incredible demand coupled with overall global supply constraints as the cause.

Recently, reports show a spike in people using the drug off-label, many using tele-health providers to get a prescription and paying hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

Some celebrities and social media influencers are taking the injection as a means to lose weight.

“If you think you’re just going to lose the weight really quick, it doesn’t work like that. It takes time to build up to certain levels. So, I think sometimes it becomes sensationalized and the new weight loss excitement,"

WHAT IS OZEMPIC?
Also known as Semaglutide or Wegovy, Ozempic helps people lose weight by increasing insulin sensitivity and suppressing appetite. Semaglutide lowers blood sugar levels and regulates insulin, which is crucial for people with Type 2 diabetes. The drug also imitates a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 that we naturally produce in our intestines, limiting appetite by signalling to our bodies that we feel full and prompting our stomachs to empty more slowly. As a result, people with obesity and accompanying health concerns have lost weight while taking it. People feel fuller faster and often find that foods that they used to crave or find really exciting are no longer exciting. It isn’t, however, suitable for those with an average healthy weight, and it should always be overseen by a medical professional.

Ozempic is self-administered once a week, in 0.5 milligrams, 1 milligram or 2-milligram dosages.

Do you have unexplained high or low blood glucose? Do you find that your blood test results aren’t reflecting your effort and hard work? If you have lived with type 1 or insulin dependent type 2 diabetes for many years, you may be suffering from a complication of injecting insulin called lipohypertrophy, also called “lipo”.

What is this lipohypertrophy?
Many people with diabetes who inject insulin don’t know what lipo is because their medical team may have neglected to mention it in their review of self-management care. It’s important to understand lipohypertrophy because it can cause variable insulin absorption resulting in unexplained high and low blood glucose (bg), and really cause problems, including a visit to the ER.
